The Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons Quality Collaborative (MSTCVS-QC) is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and Blue Care Network (BCN) Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI) dedicated to improving the care of adult cardiac and general thoracic surgery patients in Michigan. The Quality Collaborative is a consortium of hospitals that work together to promote and share optimal processes of care and implement quality improvement initiatives based on regional and national data, clinical research, and evidence-based cardiac and thoracic surgery practices and guidelines.

We are currently seeking a full-time Statistician Intermediate to support analytic work for the MSTCVS Coordinating Center located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The biostatistician will leverage large, multi-center clinical registries to draw insights into the care and outcomes of patients undergoing adult cardiac and general thoracic surgery across the state. The statistician will have a primary appointment in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan, will report directly to the MSTCVS Program Manager, and will be housed at the MSTCVS Coordinating Center.

The MSTCVS statistician will play an important role in supporting projects aimed at enhancing the quality of cardiothoracic surgery outcomes in Michigan. This position involves study design, data cleaning, data analysis, summarization, and interpretation. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and refine analytic approaches in collaboration with investigative teams and the lead statistician.
  • Write and edit programs to clean, manage, merge, and analyze data.
  • Develop tables, charts, and graphs for quarterly meetings.
  • Maintain and update documentation and annotation of analytic code.
  • Contribute to the development of analysis methodology and prepare documentation for internal and external audiences.
  • Manage and analyze large datasets, including registry and administrative claims data.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field with strong computing and statistical skills and at least 2 years of professional experience in data analysis.

Technical Expertise:

  • Proficiency in SAS, R, STATA, and/or SPSS for data management and statistical analysis.
  • Experience managing and analyzing large, complex datasets, including linking multiple data sources.
  • Familiarity with common biostatistical methods, including generalized linear models, survival analysis, mixed models, and longitudinal regression.
  • Ability to design and implement analysis plans and draft statistical tests aligned with project goals.
  • Knowledge of data visualization techniques and ability to create clear, actionable dashboards, tables, and charts.

Additional Skills:

  • Understanding of clinical data integration concepts.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain thorough documentation of analytic code and methodology.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently while managing multiple projects.
  • Effective communication skills for presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to evolving project needs.

Preferred: Master's degree in Biostatistics or related field with 3-4 years of analytic experience preferred.

Full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday. Hybrid work environment (onsite and remote) based out of our Ann Arbor, Michigan office. Flexible schedule required, with in-office days as needed and availability to attend quarterly Quality Collaborative meetings at various locations across Michigan.
