STEM Lab Technician
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The employee is responsible for providing personal, qualified laboratory assistance to the STEM laboratories. The primary responsibility is to prepare a series of laboratory preparations and the instructor's assistance related to specific content areas of chemistry.
This is a Support Staff union position as stated in the Support Staff collective bargaining agreement.
- Prepare Chemistry and Physical Science lab materials for experiments, per instructor requests.
- Supervise student workers in the preparation and storage of material used in experimentation.
- Conduct inventory of supplies for Chemistry and Physical Science.
- Maintain and repair laboratory instruments and equipment; propose orders for additional maintenance, repair or replacement.
- Conduct inventory of equipment and materials on a regular schedule
- Maintain cleanliness in all lab rooms and stockrooms in the related areas.
- Follow the Right -To- Know law as it applies to the Chemistry and Physical Science.
- Prepare and properly label all solutions required in the related laboratory courses.
- Responsible for the proper storage of materials, chemicals, equipment in appropriated containers and locations.
- Receive and check in purchased materials.
- Set up and remove lab experimentation materials and equipment.
- Prepare requisitions of miscellaneous materials for the Chemistry and Physical Science labs and related areas.
- Maintain an inventory of materials, equipment and chemicals for Chemistry and Physical Science and related areas.
- Prepare, send and set up/tear down materials, equipment, and chemicals.
- Meet with appropriate faculty and the area Supervisor on a regular basis for communication and coordination.
- Coordinate with the College Chemical Hygiene Safety Officer to train full time faculty and adjuncts teaching in the laboratory of the Physical Sciences and related areas according to the Right- To- Know law. Also, any students that are hired to work in the related laboratories of the Physical Sciences.
- Other related duties as assigned.
OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The primary and most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students and other members of the College community.
Education Required:
Associate Degree. Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related area preferred
Experience Required:
One (1) to two (2) years of directly related applicable experience
Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements
- Ability to provide support and assistance in an educational laboratory facility
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Earth Science, Chemistry and the related Physical Sciences
