Overview
Cracking in concrete is a complex physical process caused by its heterogeneous structure, and reinforcement is used to improve crack resistance. The interaction zone with reinforcement complicates cracking, leading to multiple cracks. Traditional deterministic models fail to accurately predict reinforced concrete cracking because they cannot capture the variability in crack widths or maximum crack openings.
What you'll learn
This Stochastic fracture model for reinforced concrete composites (Civil Engineering) research initiative at VILNIUS TECH develops a stochastic fracture model based on random fields, which will be integrated into the FE software ATENA to predict crack width. This approach models material properties spatially without detailed mesostructural discretization, while maintaining computational efficiency comparable to standard models. The model accounts for the probability distribution of material properties and, through simulations and statistical (interval) analysis, provides an interval estimate of crack widths. An iterative process refines predictions by aligning them with experimental data, adjusting the random field parameters accordingly. Visit the programme website for more information
The selected candidate will work on the PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Viktor Gribniak. The successful applicant will have to attend scientific conferences, meetings, and internships at other universities.
