The Student Accessibility Specialist for Student Accessibility Services (SAS) provides academic and personal support and accommodations to undergraduate and graduate students with diagnosed learning disorders; psychiatric disorders; hearing, visual, and mobility-related impairments; medical conditions; and temporary disabilities. The Specialist manages and oversees the Testing Center, manages testing schedules, communicates with faculty regarding exams, and ensures a quiet/distraction reduced environment. In addition, the Specialist manages all areas of Assistive Technology for students with disabilities at UMES.
- Reports to the Director of SAS and assists in determining and implementing appropriate accommodations for students with learning, physical, and psychological disabilities.
- Maintain a case-load of students registered with the Office of Student Accessibility Services and provide case management including, but not limited to, scheduled check-ins for the purposes of accommodations management, resource referral, assistance with executive functioning strategies, student outreach, and advisement on University policies and procedures.
- Manages all quizzes, testing, etc for students with disabilities in the Testing Center.
- Supervise student and part-time employees in the Testing Center.
- Provides supports in administration of examinations with accommodations to students with disabilities. At times, may be responsible for sitting in as a proctor and/or reader and scribe.
- Monitor, assess, and implement developments in available assistive technologies.
- Train students and staff on assistive technologies used on campus.
- Oversee creation and organize production of accessible materials.
- Work closely with Campus Medical Office, Director of Housing, Career Services, Student Services to assure accessibility for students experiencing temporary or chronic medical conditions that require environmental adjustments.
- Assists students with disabilities at commencement and convocation ceremonies.
- Assists with sending out accommodation notifications.
- Create alternative format course materials (textbooks, articles, handouts) for students with disabilities.
- Scan materials for conversion to various electronic and print formats, proofread reformatted materials.
- Organize document production, and train students to use accessible tools, such as voice recognition and e-text.
- Assists with providing consultation to faculty and staff on disability-related issues.
- Serves on committees as needed and approved by the Director.
- Assists in managing office communication materials, including but not limited to, flyers, brochures, and website updating.
- Assists in creating and revising existing policies and compiling data.
- Continues to develop understanding of applicable federal laws, and assistive technology, in order to better assist students, staff, and faculty.
- Provides general office and administrative support for the department.
- Writes appointment/meeting notes in Accommodate in a timely fashion.
- May need to work some early mornings, nights, and weekends during high peak periods.
- Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.
