Nature & Purpose of Position
Newton Gresham Library faculty and staff envision a library that supports and enhances the development of critically thinking, educated, and informed lifelong learners. The Library is critical the University’s learning and research mission and endeavors to create physical and virtual environments that promote discovery of new knowledge and the transfer of existing knowledge. The Library fulfills this mission by providing organized access to a diverse array of quality print, electronic, and other resources and by continuously improving the effectiveness of its instructional and research services.
Nature of Position
Cataloging student assistants perform specialized clerical work involving the application of standard library techniques and procedures. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to perform tasks that may involve prolonged periods of concentration. Responsibilities of Cataloging student assistants may include, but are not limited to the following: using library software to assist with maintenance of the library’s database of cataloged materials, preparing new library materials for shelving, retrieving/shelving books and other library materials, cleaning and maintaining work area, performing basic administrative office functions including filing, sorting, running errands, etc. Duties may be assigned based on the student assistant’s strengths and schedule. No previous work experience is required, but emphasis will be placed on experience with detail-oriented tasks and teamwork whether the previous experience was performed on a paid or volunteer basis.
Other Requirements for the Position
Candidate is a self-starter and can work well with little supervision, accomplishes tasks in a timely and accurate manner, and follows up appropriately. The candidate must be comfortable working in a team setting and taking direction from multiple individuals. Candidate should have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). The library is open year-round, and applicants must be available to work during the summer and winter breaks. All positions require the ability to lift 50 pounds and move carts of library materials. Bending low and using step stools may also be required. Students must be enrolled in at least six (6) hours per long semester to be eligible. Standard department hours of operation are 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. Applicants must be available to work within this range. Student assistants submit their own weekly schedules each semester. Student assistants are required to work a minimum of ten (10) hours per week. The maximum number of hours per week is limited to twenty (20). Punctual and consistent attendance is expected. Supervisors must be notified in advance of absences. Cataloging student assistants cannot hold another on-campus job.
