Student Athletics Trainer (Extended)
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. LaGuardia Community College is seeking a highly qualified Student Athletics Trainer to support the Recreation, intercollegiate athletics, and aquatics programs. The Sports Trainer will be responsible for providing injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care for student-athletes, recreational, and aquatics participants. This position requires availability for all athletic events, recreation programs, and college wide special events. Reporting to the Director of Athletics & Recreation, the Student Athletics Trainer will perform, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
Athletic Training & Medical Care
- Provide on-site medical coverage for all assigned home athletic events, recreation activities, aquatics programs, and LaGuardia special events (e.g., 5K races).
- Evaluate athletic & recreational injuries including acute and overuse conditions.
- Administer immediate care for injuries such as sprains, strains, and contusions.
- Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation and return-to-play programs.
- Provide ongoing treatment and monitoring for injured student-athletes and participants.
Medical Coordination & Communication
- Communicate with external medical providers, including physicians, physical therapists, and imaging centers, regarding follow-up care, MRI results, and treatment plans.
- Maintain accurate and confidential medical records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and college policies.
- Serve as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, medical professionals, and college administration regarding injury status and medical clearance.
Work Environment
- Maintain Indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, recreation spaces, and aquatics area.
Documentation & Compliance
- Collect, review, and maintain all required sports physicals, medical histories, and clearance documentation for student-athletes.
- Provide catastrophic insurance documentation for providers, and institutions requiring coverage related to game or practice related injuries.
- Ensure compliance with NJCAA, CUNY, New York City, and New York State athletic health and safety regulations.
Recreation & Aquatics Support
- Assist with recreational programming for injury prevention and medical treatment
- Support the Aquatics Department with medical coverage during swim activities, aquatic events, and related programming.
- Assist in emergency action planning for recreation, aquatics, and athletic facilities.
Performance & Wellness Support
- Support strength and conditioning efforts in collaboration with coaches and recreation staff.
- Provide basic nutrition guidance and wellness planning for student-athletes (nutrition planning experience a plus).
- Educate student-athletes on injury prevention, hydration, recovery, and healthy training habits.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required as well as National Athletic Trainers Association certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Current New York State Athletic Trainer License.
- Current NYC and New York State required certifications to practice.
- CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification (must be current).
- Proven experience providing athletic training services in a collegiate, high school, or recreation setting.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required by athletic and recreation schedules.
- Certification or experience in Strength and Conditioning.
- Experience with nutrition planning or athlete wellness programming.
- Experience working with aquatics programs.
- Familiarity with NJCAA and CUNY athletic health requirements.
- Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting equipment, and responding quickly to injuries.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Develops, coordinates and administers a comprehensive training and sports medicine program for intercollegiate sports and provides related professional and administrative services.
- Develops and maintains a program of preventive physical care for student-athletes; and coordinates physical examination screenings
- Supervises treatment and referral of injuries and interfaces directly with medical personnel in the treatment of such athletes; coordinates rehabilitation programs; may administer related insurance program(s)
- Determines and ensures the acquisition of safety equipment and supplies applicable to each intercollegiate sport
- Supervises maintenance of statistical records of team injuries and medical data
- Assists coaches in planning and instructing physical training programs for athletes.
- Plans and schedules the purchasing of all sports medical program supplies and equipment within allocated budget parameters
- Recruits, instructs, supervises and reviews the performance of training staff
- Performs related duties as assigned.
