Student Conduct Coordinator
The Student Conduct Coordinator (SCC) supports TUJ's commitment to fostering a respectful and mutually accountable student community within its highly international and multi-ethnic environment at its campuses in Tokyo and Kyoto. To help ensure a safe learning environment and elevate student success, the SCC addresses student concerns about peer behavior, facilitates conflict resolution, upholds conduct standards, and develops training initiatives to educate students on community expectations.
Embedded in the Office of Student Services and Engagement (OSSE), the SCC balances empathy and policy enforcement, supports informal resolution processes and formal conduct proceedings when needed, and contributes to broader OSSE student support efforts during lower-volume periods. The role requires a commitment to student success and education combined with promptness, cultural competency, clear communication across linguistic differences, and collaboration with OSSE and the General Counsel’s office. The SCC will work closely with the Assistant Dean of Students and the General Counsel (who acts as the Student Conduct Administrator) in investigating allegations of misbehavior and will be responsible for maintaining the database for conduct cases.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Guide students in navigating peer behavior concerns, emphasizing cross-cultural communication, mutual respect and boundary-setting in a diverse community.
- Act as the primary point of contact for student complaints against other students, and for reports by faculty or staff about student misconduct.
- Promptly conduct initial investigations of allegations of inappropriate behavior that may violate university conduct norms.
- Facilitate the resolution of conflicts between students, if permissible outside of formal disciplinary hearings.
- Promptly report instances of serious misconduct to the Assistant Dean of Students and the Student Conduct Administrator.
- Maintain accurate records in the conduct management system (Advocate) for student conduct cases.
- Develop, facilitate and participate in delivering training programs for students on conflict resolution, self-advocacy, responsible decision-making, community standards, behavioral expectations, and student rights and responsibilities.
- Collaborate with staff and faculty in providing outreach and training on conduct reporting protocols and student behavior management.
- The SCC may participate in an on-call support rotation for student crises, in coordination with OSSE.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 1–3 years of professional experience in student conduct, student affairs, legal, or a related area in a higher education or comparable setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong interpersonal skills, facilitation, and cross-cultural conflict resolution skills.
