Your opportunity:

In collaboration with the Supervisor, Intercultural Fluency and International Student Development, the Student Development Coordinator (SDC), International Programs will advance the International Education Centre’s (IEC) mission, as an innovative, collaborative, and globally significant leader in the internationalization of the student experience. The Coordinator will play a critical role in developing, supporting and advancing the work of the IEC, in order to provide coordinated and meaningful support to international and globally-minded students at UTM.

The SDC, International Programs will assume primary responsibility for the development and delivery of in-person programs and supports that enhance the international student experience and prepare them for success at UTM, in Canada, and beyond. The SDC will achieve this through the conception, implementation, and delivery of multi-modal programs that reflect the programmatic cornerstones of peer mentorship, engagement, student learning and development. In particular, the SDC, International Programs will oversee in-person international student orientation and in-person community-building supports and programs during peak stages of the student development timeline (e.g., fall and winter orientation, summer student staff training, etc.).

The SDC, in collaboration with other IEC staff, will be responsible for the supervision and leadership development of a team of student staff. The SDC will actively work with the staff team to establish a sense of community and belonging amongst international students.

The Coordinator will need to be on campus to deliver programs, and occasional overtime and flex time are required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing components of co-curricular and in-person programs and activities for international students at UTM such as international student orientation, international student mentorship program, and both on and off-campus community-building events for international students.
  • Fostering cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars.
  • Developing student assessment plans to support student learning outcomes and competencies.
  • Advising students on co-curricular, academic and personal matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background.
  • Keeping well-informed on theories related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Directing the activities of casual staff.
  • Training and coaching student life staff and student leaders.

Essential Qualifications:

  • University degree in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years related professional experience with international students and post-secondary students.
  • Strong experiential background developing and delivering programs and supports that enhance the international student experience.
  • Experience in facilitating partnerships with constituents from a variety of institutional functional areas (students, student leaders, staff, faculty and administration).
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring, and supervising student leaders and staff.
  • Exceptional intercultural competency awareness; experience working with diverse communities and cultures and an understanding of anti-oppression and equity practices.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory, and problem solving skills. Must be comfortable working as a member of a team composed of very different individuals with varying responsibilities.
  • Ability to relate to students in a manner that engenders trust and confidence and must be able to demonstrate the ability to implement programs.
  • Strong assessment (quantitative and qualitative) skills, including program evaluation and performance assessments.
  • Excellent administrative skills, including word processing, data analysis, desktop publishing and experience with databases.
  • Commitment to improving and enhancing the student experience; understanding of professional best practices for programs, policies and staff development.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Knowledge of University of Toronto practices across numerous departmental settings is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of customer service and information communication standards of practice; understanding of professional best practices for programs, policies and staff development in accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Thorough knowledge of the university’s procedures as they relate to the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (FIPPA) and management of confidential student information.
  • Training in Project Management would be an asset.
