Reporting to the Director of the Wellness Center, the Student Psychological Counselor (SPC) will conduct intake interviews, provide short-term individual therapy, group counseling, crisis assessment/intervention to students in need of mental health and emotional support. The SPC will also provide outreach and consultative services to the multicultural and highly diverse campus community, including presenting psycho-educational workshops to students and leading trainings for faculty and staff. In addition, the position requires researching and keeping abreast of Best Practices in the field of Counseling/Psychology.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Work collaboratively with other departments to refer students in emergency situations.
- Collaborate with the Wellness Center staff to continuously evaluate policies and procedures and improve student services.
- Plan various outreach activities to familiarize the college community with the services available at the Wellness Center.
- Serve as a clinical and task supervisor for Mental Health Counseling graduate interns.
- Assist in the development of a crisis and threat assessment protocol.
- Monitor the status and progress of individual cases and projects; may participate in the training of lower-level professionals.
- Collaborate with the Wellness Center staff to research and establish relationships with local community counseling agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required. A Doctoral degree in Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) or a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for person or psychological counseling and a New York State license as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling).
Preferred Qualifications: An understanding and sensitivity to underrepresented populations and multicultural competency; clinical skills to assess and intervene with a wide range of disorders; thorough knowledge and experience with providing short-term individual counseling, evaluation, and crisis intervention services.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides student counseling services as a member of a team. Provides psychological counseling to individuals and groups of students. Performs crisis intervention for emergency situations. Performs intake and assessment for personal counseling services. Consults with instructional and administrative staff regarding student mental health issues; may prepare and present outreach initiatives and workshops. Participates in recommending improvements that will impact the counseling center's effectiveness. Performs related duties as assigned.
