Position Summary

The Student Research Worker provides critical support to a cognitive health research team in the Neurology Department at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigators, Dr. Jennifer Manly and Dr. Adam Brickman, and research staff, this position contributes to the implementation and organization of study activities, including the management of research documentation, coordination of biospecimen handling, and accurate entry of research and inventory data.

The role supports the maintenance of study protocols, regulatory compliance, and effective communication within the research team. Through these activities, the assistant will gain practical experience in research operations, data management, and interdisciplinary collaboration within an academic medical center environment.

Responsibilities

Research Operations and Administrative Support

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support for ongoing cognitive health research studies under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior research staff.
  • Maintain organized and accurate physical and electronic study files, including study trackers, logs, and documentation required for efficient research operations.
  • Assist with scheduling, coordination, and communication related to study activities as needed.

Study Documentation and Regulatory Support

  • Scan, upload, and manage research documentation using standardized naming conventions and version control practices consistent with institutional and study guidelines.
  • Support the maintenance of study records in accordance with regulatory, institutional, and sponsor requirements.
  • Assist research staff with preparation and organization of materials for review or internal monitoring activities as directed.

Biospecimen Handling and Coordination

  • Assist with the coordination of biospecimen pickup, labeling, and tracking in adherence with study protocols and quality standards and in collaboration with laboratory and study staff.
  • Communicate with laboratory and research staff to support proper sample handling and documentation.

Inventory and resource management

  • Monitor and document inventory for study supplies and materials; maintain logs for equipment and specimens to support research activities and regulatory compliance.

Data entry and quality support

  • Accurately enter participant or study data into designated databases and perform basic data cleaning and verification to support analysis.
  • Conduct routine data quality checks and assist in preparing data for review by research staff.

General Research Support

  • Participate in study meetings and communicate with study personnel as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned that support the successful execution of research protocols.
  • Completion of applicable compliance trainings (e.g., human subjects protection) as directed prior to initiating duties.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Degree or equivalent in education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work 10 hours a week.
  • Ability to work in-person on the CUIMC campus when required.
  • Interest in health, cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, or related research fields.
  • Bilingual skill-set ? English and Spanish Fluency.
