Student Retail Assistant
The New Store, The New School's official campus retail store, is seeking a Federal Work Study student employee to support daily store operations. Responsibilities include providing customer service, assisting with sales transactions, stocking merchandise, maintaining store displays, and supporting special events (Inventory, pop ups, etc.).
The position reports to the Associate Director. A successful candidate will be reliable, detail-oriented, customer-focused, and able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
The student employee will help create a positive shopping experience for the university community while gaining hands-on experience in retail operations, merchandising, and customer service.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Sales & Transaction Management
- Registers transactions accurately, including sales, returns, and general packing of merchandise
Merchandising & Store Presentation
- Executes daily stock maintenance by ensuring all merchandise and fixtures are displayed, replenished, and clean
Customer Service & Engagement
- Responds to customer inquiries and assists customers in making selections
- Creates a positive and memorable experience for customers, including prospective students and parents visiting on tours, supporting conversion and sales
- Ensures all customer interactions align with and support the school's mission for The New Store
Operational Communication & Escalation
- Escalates store needs, merchandise issues, new ideas, and customer feedback to the Store Manager & Associate Director
E-Commerce & Order Fulfillment
- Assists in fulfilling online orders
Inventory Management
- Participates in inventory counts and cycle counts
Professional Conduct & Compliance
- Maintains a professional and positive presence on the sales floor
- Complies with all scheduling and attendance policies
Institutional Knowledge
- Stays current on school events and is knowledgeable of the school layout
Events & Off-Site Support
- Staffs pop-up events at other locations and affiliated retail events
Additional Responsibilities
- Performs other duties reasonably related to the functions described above
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Retail sales experience preferred but not required
- Committed to delivering a high level of customer service
- Strong verbal, organizational, and communication skills
- Able to perform physical tasks as needed - lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work a POS, Inventory Management Systems

WORK MODE
On Campus Position: This position is in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
Hourly Rate: $18.00 per hour
