Job Description

Provide personal and academic coaching for current Idaho State University students identified as participants of the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant. Provide initiatives to increase persistence, retention, and completion for first generation, limited income students, and students with disabilities. Accordingly, the role of the Advisor is to deliver comprehensive advising services and coordinate student development activities.

This role provides support for students to persist and develop the skills necessary to earn a Bachelor's Degree. The SSS Advisor builds a strong relationship with SSS students and provides holistic support, relying on effective student development theories and coaching models that foster a sense of belonging, student engagement, resilience, self-direction, and strong work ethic. The Student Support Advisor maintains a caseload of assigned participants and delivers consistent monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on participants' academic progress via reporting method - case notes in file folders, notes in Blumen. etc. The Advisor will work with the TRIO SSS team to connect students with on and off-campus resources. This position assists with planning and implementation of academic skills building, educational, financial, social, and cultural programs in accordance with SSS program regulations and project expectations. Services provided by the Advisor in cooperation with other staff members must be of sufficient quantity and quality to ensure all project objectives are met.

This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Advising and Assistance

  • Caseload Management: Manage a caseload of approximately 125 TRIO SSS participants, providing regular advising (in-person and virtual) to support academic progress, retention, and graduation.
  • Student Success Planning: Develop individual success plans, assisting students with class scheduling, degree requirements (e.g., Degree Works), and navigating academic policies.
  • Academic & Life Coaching: Conduct workshops and provide coaching on essential academic skills (time management, study skills, tech navigation) and life-balance strategies.
  • Campus Referrals: Proactively connect students with campus resources, including tutoring, counseling, career services, and other academic support programs.
  • Graduate School Preparation: Advise students on graduate and professional school opportunities and assist them throughout the application process.
  • Record Keeping: Accurately document all student interactions, academic progress, and GPA tracking in physical files and the Blumen database.

Financial Aid Assistance

  • Application Support: Assist students in applying for financial aid and scholarships, including the FAFSA and Bengal Online Scholarship System (BOSS), and guide them through any verification processes.
  • Financial Literacy: Provide coaching to improve financial awareness, emphasizing responsible borrowing, loan counseling, and Federal Work-Study opportunities.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate tracking and documentation of FAFSA completion and financial aid progress in student files and databases.

Career/Educational Trips & Events

  • Event Coordination & Chaperoning: Coordinate, transport, and chaperone students on educational field trips and graduate school visits, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Career Networking: Facilitate professional networking by connecting program participants with potential employers at career fairs and related events.

Program Operations & Support (Other)

  • Instruction: Teach ACAD course(s) for TRIO SSS students during the academic year and Summer Bridge programs.
  • Recruitment & Onboarding: Support program operations by assisting with SSS Orientation, onboarding new participants, and presenting program information to the campus community for recruitment.
  • Student Development: Design and implement programming focused on the non-cognitive development, leadership skills, and college transition of low-income and first-generation students.
  • Reporting & Grant Support: Assist the Director with program evaluations, grant funding proposals, and the preparation of the Department of Education Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • Campus & Community Collaboration: Collaborate with campus departments to advocate for student needs, participate in university committees, and attend state/regional TRIO meetings.
  • Specialized Supervision: May be asked to coordinate and supervise specific program areas, such as student tutoring services or specialized participant programming.
  • General Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, education, psychology, student personnel, social work, public administration, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of student development theories related to recruitment and retention and graduation of at-risk students.
  • Training in holistic academic advising, proactive tutoring, and/or curriculum development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of curriculum or services needed to advise students through postsecondary education.
  • Training in working with adult educational programs.
  • Training in supplemental instruction, tutoring, and/or course development.
  • Training in career counseling practices.
  • Training in supporting students with disabilities.
  • Counseling or social work background with up-to-date credentials.

Additional Information

Salary will be $49,750 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
