Be the first point of support — help students thrive through compassionate, connected wellbeing care

At Macquarie University, we understand that wellbeing is foundational to student success, and we are committed to providing meaningful, accessible support when it matters most. We are looking for a Student Wellbeing Officer to join our Student Wellbeing team within the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Students. In this front-line role, you will be the first point of contact for students seeking wellbeing support — offering a compassionate ear, conducting initial assessments, and connecting students with the services and resources they need to flourish.

This is more than a support role — it is an opportunity to be part of a dedicated, multidisciplinary team working to shape a culture of care across the University community.

Due to the collaborative nature of this role, we’re looking for someone who can be based onsite. This will help you connect quickly with key stakeholders and immerse yourself in the work from day one. We do support flexible working as needs arise.

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager, CARE and Welfare, you will play a vital role in ensuring students who self-access or are referred to Student Wellbeing receive timely, appropriate initial support. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing first-contact support to students accessing wellbeing services, including appropriate initial support, triage, and escalation as required.
  • Applying mental health first aid principles, including conducting initial risk assessments.
  • Identifying wellbeing issues that may impact a student's participation, progression, and academic success.
  • Guiding students to appropriate services by promoting, referring, and encouraging participation in wellbeing services, educational programs, and related supports.
  • Processing written, email, phone, and in-person enquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Contributing feedback, information, and data to support the development of wellbeing resources, programs, and initiatives.
  • Assisting team members in the practical implementation of programs, initiatives, and student plans to ensure accessibility and wellbeing needs are met effectively.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the wellbeing service and contributing to student wellbeing projects.

About Us

The Student Wellbeing team sits within the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Students, which has overall responsibility for student support services and the student experience — including Student Engagement, Equity, Diversity and Belonging, Complaints and Misconduct, and Student Wellbeing Services. The team works closely with internal partners such as Service Connect and Campus Life, as well as external emergency, crisis, health, and community support services.

About You

You are a compassionate, motivated professional with a genuine commitment to supporting student wellbeing. You bring practical experience in a pastoral or support-focused role and are confident providing first-response care in a dynamic, people-centred environment. You work well within a multidisciplinary team and are energised by the opportunity to make a tangible, positive impact on student life.

Selection Criteria:

  • A relevant qualification and previous experience in a pastoral or student support role.
  • Current Mental Health First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to respond to the needs of diverse student groups, providing information, advice, and guidance while clarifying procedures and responding to feedback.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to analyse student caseload data and report on trends to managers and colleagues.
  • Ability to analyse data provided by external agencies or other university departments (e.g., student satisfaction data).
  • High motivation and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on student life at the University.

How to Apply

To be considered, please apply online with your CV and a cover letter outlining how your experience aligns with the selection criteria (above).
