Additional Schedule Information: General hours are Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm. Hours worked must meet the demands of the program portfolio. Early morning, nights, and weekends will be necessary during summer camp session.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in a related field. Experience with both day and overnight camps. Familiarity with ACA standards and youth safety protocols. Proficiency in registration systems and data reporting tools. Experience working with diverse staff and university-based programs. Minimum 3 years of experience in youth programs or camp leadership. Proven ability to manage staff, budgets, and complex operations. Strong communication, organizational, and crisis management skills.
Position Summary: The Summer Camp Director serves as the primary leader and operational manager for all summer youth programming under the Summer Academy at UGA. This role requires daily, on-campus commitment during the summer camp season and is responsible for the comprehensive execution of all camp operations. Throughout the summer, this person serves as the essential on-ground presence, providing continuous operational oversight, direct staff leadership, immediate response and open communication, and real-time coordination of all camp programming and logistics. The Director ensures the highest standards of safety, program quality, and participant experience while managing a diverse team of seasonal staff and instructors. The University of Georgia’s Summer Academy provides an innovative series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and career exploration camps designed to inspire learners of all ages and backgrounds. Our comprehensive program serves middle and high school students seeking to expand their academic horizons through hands-on learning experiences in Athens, Georgia. Participants have the opportunity to develop new technical skills, explore potential career pathways, and discover emerging passions within a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment that prioritizes both educational excellence and enjoyment. Recognizing the importance of early engagement, Summer Academy Jr. extends our mission to younger learners aged 7-10, offering age-appropriate programming that builds foundational skills while preparing participants for advanced camp experiences as they mature. Both programs are committed to creating memorable, transformative summer experiences that foster curiosity, creativity, and academic growth in a safe and engaging atmosphere. The Summer Academy represents the University of Georgia’s dedication to providing exceptional educational opportunities that inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and lifelong learners. This position supports year-round youth programming development and collaborates closely with and under the supervision/direction of the Director of Youth Programs. The Director is expected to lead with measured autonomy in day-to-day operations while aligning with institutional policies and strategic goals.

Physical Demands: Maintain on-site and as-needed presence during summer camp season. Withstand extended periods in outdoor environments. Stand, walk, and be actively engaged for 9+ hours daily. Lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Drive to various locations.
Duties/Responsibilities: Leadership & Operations Serve as the primary authority for all summer camp operations with responsibility for day and overnight camp operations during the camp season with the direction and support of the Director of Youth Programs. Collaborate with administrative leadership in developing comprehensive camp policies, procedures, and safety protocols by contributing operational expertise and practical feedback, then assume primary on-site responsibility for their systematic implementation and consistent enforcement across all camp programs, serving as the key authority for translating guidelines into daily practice and ensuring adherence by all staff and participants. Coordinate camp logistics with university departments, external partners, and community stakeholders. Collaborating with partners to ensure all program elements meet or exceed quality standards. Responsible for minors’ protection policies, regulatory requirements, and emergency response protocols. (40% of time) Staff Management Recruit, hire, train, and supervise all temporary summer camp staff and instructors. Provide ongoing development and performance management. Foster a positive team culture and ensure compliance with university policies. Develop staff schedules and coordinate appropriate coverage during Summer. (25% of time) Financial Oversight Assist in managing camp-related expenditures and maintain budget accountability. Oversee purchases and inventory of program materials. Coordinate with finance on billing and refunds. (15% of time) Customer Relations & Marketing Primary point of contact during Summer Academy for all parent and family contact. Respond to inquiries from parents, guardians, and participants. Primary responsibility for participant concerns and special accommodation requests. (10% of time) Administrative & Program Development Prepare program reports, evaluations, and assessments. Manage registration systems (Modern Campus) and website content. Manage survey development, data collection, and analysis for program improvement. Support year-round youth programming and collaborate on strategic planning and expansion. (10% of time)
