Sustainability Officer
The Sustainability Officer manages a portfolio of initiatives and projects in support of the University of California, Riverside Office of Sustainability, including close coordination with the Academic Sustainability Faculty Lead. The officer reports to the Campus Architect/Associate Vice Chancellor for Planning, Design, & Construction (PD&C) and assists in positioning UC Riverside as a national and global higher education leader in sustainability.
Responsibilities include supporting the development of a collaborative organizational model to address campus sustainability priorities, such as academic and research infrastructure, environmental protection, economic stability, social equity, energy, climate change, water, waste, transportation, procurement, food systems, and green buildings. The role involves providing recommendations for sustainability strategy, overseeing management, policy, innovation, brand reputation, and program development & assessment.
The officer will foster partnerships across academic and operational areas to develop UC Riverside as a living laboratory for sustainability. Key duties include establishing an effective communication strategy, managing data collection for sustainability planning and reporting (e.g., AASHE STARS, Sierra Club Green Schools, Princeton Review Green College Guide), and submitting reports to relevant organizations and the University of California Office of the President.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, management, or policy; architecture; engineering; or public health (master's degree or PhD preferred). 6-10 years of related experience, preferably in higher education or public sector sustainability. Advanced knowledge of environmental sustainability management, U.S. Green Building Council rating systems, and skills in organizing information, communication, and leading programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts and oversees independent research projects on sustainability issues (15%).
- Recommends, develops, and implements programs, policies, and guidelines for sustainability projects (10%).
- Facilitates communication strategies for awareness of sustainability programs (10%).
- Identifies opportunities to position environmental solutions and build partnerships (10%).
- Serves as sustainability spokesperson and represents the university at conferences (5%).
- Conducts analyses of energy consumption and environmental impacts (5%).
- Serves as liaison for strategic sustainability initiatives (5%).
