Systems Technician
The Opportunity
The Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge is entering an exciting new era. We have recently moved into the state-of-the-art Ray Dolby Centre, a purpose-built facility for world-leading research. To support this transition and ensure our academic mission is met, we are seeking a proactive Systems Technician to join our dedicated team.
The Role
As a key member of our IT Services Server team, working with our Help Desk and Coding teams, you will undertake first-line troubleshooting of reported server hardware, operating system and software problems, triage potential issues identified through monitoring, and performing day-to-day administrative tasks. This is an on-site role which supports our expanding on-premise utility and mid-range server fleet with its associated networking, in addition to supporting cloud-based servers.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- System administration: Deploying, configuring and troubleshooting physical and virtual servers as part of a larger team. Performing hardware and software upgrades, and maintaining server rooms and racks in accordance with established Change Management and other SOPs.
- User account management: Supporting customer requests related to server user accounts, quotas, software and access control.
- Network support: Undertaking network patching to support servers and switches, using systems to configure system server network connectivity, and providing on-site first-line response to server network support requests and incidents.
- Cybersecurity: Managing system and data backups to ensure post-incident recovery in line with local SOPs and University cybersecurity standards, and helping to monitor servers, logs and network activity for potential issues.
Who we are looking for
We seek a results-oriented team player with the motivation to help us deliver ongoing successes to our IT Services customers in Physics and across the collegiate University. You should have:
- A working knowledge of on-premise and cloud-based servers and operating systems, and the ability to provide first-line support to resolve issues within a wider incident response framework.
- The ability to work within a highly professional, organised, and Agile-based team framework using Jira sprints, SOPs and defined digital workflows.
- The determination to learn our IT ecosystem, contribute to ongoing improvements in its effectiveness, and advance your IT career with us.
- A commitment to customer service excellence, meeting SLAs, maintaining our CSAT scores and reputation within the stakeholder communities we serve.
