Job Summary

The Laboratory Manager position in the Reisman lab in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) at Caltech will manage all aspects of the lab operation in the field of organic synthetic chemistry. The position is full-time and on campus.

Essential Job Duties

• Manages order requests for lab equipment and consumable supplies for lab members; interacts and negotiates with vendors for their procurement. Initiates and maintains contact with vendors and conducts product searches to recommend cost/benefit options to the researcher.
• Assists group members with inventory of lab equipment, consumables, and organization and maintenance of communal access of specific reagents, chemicals, and lab supplies.
• Trains and assists postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and technicians in scientific protocols as needed. Consults and advises researchers and/or students on experimental design, set-up, execution, analysis, and interpretation of results.
• Serves as a resource to help lab members design and troubleshoot experiments.
• Develops, communicates, and implements laboratory procedures.
• Provides feedback and guidance to group members on the preparation of manuscripts and presentation slides.
• Aides in the preparation and submission of research grants, including working with group members to prepare figures and summarize preliminary data.
• Assists with laboratory human resources, including hiring and lab space for facility personnel.
• Manages modifications of lab space in coordination with CCE Facilities Manager, including equipment repair and general maintenance.
• Interacts and works with other labs and Division facilities in equipment utilization, research operations, strategies, and concepts.
• Interacts with PI, group admin, and grants manager to address lab and personnel budgeting and accounting issues, monitoring fund accounts.
• Develops and implements laboratory general budget, including overseeing financial accounts.
• Oversees and works with the group safety officer to implement Institute guidelines for the safe handling of hazardous chemicals. Helps train lab members and attends safety meetings. Supervises and implements safety procedures for the disposal of hazardous waste generated in the lab.
• Oversees laboratory organization and manages regular backup of electronic laboratory notebooks.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree in chemistry with 3 years’ research experience.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and manage laboratory materials and supplies.
• Motivation, speed of learning, and an interest in the area of research are critical.
• Ability to make independent decisions with regard to prioritizing tasks, designing and carrying out experimental procedures, and operating the instruments, but will refer to the PI for troubleshooting when problems arise.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.

Hiring Range

$69,056 - $100,000 Per Year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
