About This Opportunity
The position involves teaching and clinical service in Veterinary Science with a focus on the field of Small Animal Surgery within The School of Veterinary Science. The appointee will be responsible for teaching into the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in veterinary science, veterinary technology and science. The appointee will be primarily focused on teaching but may negotiate clinical service roster in areas related to the discipline of small animal surgery and or other veterinary disciplines and, to supervise research students and maintain partnerships.
The successful applicant will be primarily focused on the teaching and coordination of surgical clinical skills at UQ SVS Gatton campus. The applicant will work closely with other academics and technical staff across the school, including with the small animal clinical surgery service in the VTH, Clinical Skills Centre, Student Clinical Skills Hub and other off site training facilities which partner with UQ to deliver surgical training of undergraduate students.
Key responsibilities will include:
Teaching
- Contribute to formal and informal teaching activities across different settings particularly in small animal surgery, general veterinary practice, and related disciplines as required.
- Carry out clinical teaching for undergraduate, postgraduate and/or professional entry level students, including coordinating courses, preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials, and undertaking assessment and marking.
- Review and innovate the curriculum in the field of small animal surgery for veterinary science and veterinary technology programs to ensure currency of knowledge, technical skills and experience at ‘Day One’ competency level.
- Coordinate courses, prepare and teach lectures and tutorials, design effective assessment and undertake marking for offerings including undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Coordinate the operation of the professional staff team and tutors, with respect to teaching practicals and other didactic modes, in veterinary surgery and general practice on the Gatton campus.
- May contribute to the small animal surgery and veterinary general practice at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Gatton campus.
- Undertake other activities which contribute to maintaining currency within the discipline and professional learning in teaching.
- Assist in managing surgical cases at locations where SVS undertakes work integrated learning in surgery and general practice skills.
Research
- Option to develop a research program in small animal surgery, general practice or related fields. This may be clinically-based research and as part of a research team.
- Undertake activities that bring together high levels of discipline related expertise and pedagogical content to contribute towards a developing profile in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning/pedagogical research.
- Publish and present the results of research, through peer reviewed journal papers, invited conference presentations or similar formats.
- Work with colleagues in the development of joint clinical research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
- Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
Supervision and Researcher Development
- Participate in the supervision and training of postgraduate students in higher degree research and advanced clinical training programs.
- Demonstrate active engagement in the responsible conduct of research.
- Facilitate the development of supervisee capabilities and skills.
Citizenship and Service
- Demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.
- Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit
- Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.
- Effectively and efficiently manage internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
- Liaise with outside animal industries and the veterinary profession on issues pertinent to veterinary surgery and general practice.

About You
- A degree in Veterinary Science, registrable in Queensland. Equivalent foreign qualifications may be considered in conjunction with other relevant qualifications.
- Recognition of advanced clinical or research training, and experience in small animal surgery or general practice disciplines (e.g. Membership of the Australian New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists) is desirable.
- Demonstrated expertise in the area of small animal surgery, general veterinary practice, and or related disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative teaching programs in veterinary surgery and general practice at ‘Day One’ competency level, and related disciplines.
- Previous teaching experience in the area of small animal surgery, general veterinary practice or related disciplines. Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels is desirable.
- Experience in the provision of a high-quality surgical services in a specialist or general practice setting.
- Evidence of a contribution to research that may include applications for competitive external grants, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals and other veterinary publications.
- Capacity to provide an excellent clinical role model for colleagues and students.
- Demonstrated ability to work flexibly with use of initiative and autonomy.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, etc.
