Job Description:

The Department of Theatre and Dance at the State University of New York, Fredonia, invites applications for a full-time lecturer in Costume Design. This position is secured by a one-year contract and is renewable annually.

The lecturer position is responsible for supporting three degree programs (BFA in Theatrical Production and Design and BA Theater Arts) and a Theatre Minor. Duties include teaching undergraduate courses in Costume design, Costume Technology and Rendering for both B.F.A. and B.A. programs and other departmental courses based on the candidate's qualifications. The successful candidate will also Design Costumes or mentor student Costume Designers for productions within the department's mainstage season. Preference may be given to the candidates with knowledge and experience in various approaches to costume design training (e.g., rendering the human form, costume history, script analysis, stitching, cutting draping and patterning). The successful candidate will assist the department with advising and recruitment/retention activities, as well as serve on departmental and campus committees as necessary.

The Department of Theatre and Dance is home to faculty and staff members dedicated to providing undergraduate performers, designers, technicians, directors, educators, and creators with engaging and meaningful experiences. The successful candidate will, in collaboration with current faculty, seek to make Fredonia's programs more active, focused, and career-oriented in all areas of theatre, including teaching artistry and community engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The particular duties for the position include but are not limited to:

  • Teach courses in the department's Costume Design focus of the BFA Theatrical Production and Design program and other courses as applicable and qualified;
  •  Participate in student assessment through annual juries;
  •  Oversee all aspects of the Costume Design process for all Departmental mainstage productions including: attend weekly design/production meetings, oversee fittings, supervise all costume, hair and make-up designs, and attend all dress rehearsals;
  • Provide academic mentoring and advisement to students;
  • Participate in the department's governing process by attending department meetings and serving on committees as assigned;
  • Participate in departmental recruitment efforts, including BFA Design/Tech interviews;
  • Contribute to curriculum development and refinement;
  • Participate in committees and provide service to the university and the profession;
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.


Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • MFA or PhD in a Theatre or Theatre Related Discipline from an accredited institution by August 2024;
  • University Teaching Experience;
  • Demonstrated Commitment to Diversity and the Needs of Diverse Learners;
  • Willingness to contribute to the General Education Program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 or more years of University teaching experience;
  • Knowledge and Experience in Various Approaches to Costume Design Training (e.g., Rendering the human form, Costume History, script analysis, stitching, cutting draping and patterning);
  • Costume Design Experience at the University Level or Professional Level;
  • Experience in Community Engagement in the Arts and/or Independent Theatre Production.


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, term appointed, non-tenure track, UUP represented position beginning Fall 2024.  The salary range is $48,396 to $53,396.
