Within the Faculty of Medicine & Health, the UNSW Discipline of Psychiatry & Mental Health is one of the largest and most successful research departments in the country, and one of the leading university psychiatry, mental health and neuroscience research groups internationally.
Why Your Role Matters:
As the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry and Mental Health Education, you will be committed to high quality undergraduate clinical psychiatry teaching and will take a leadership role in its development and delivery, including in the context of student placements at clinical sites.
This role reports to reports to the Lead for Undergraduate Psychiatry Education in the Discipline of Psychiatry and Mental Health.
Responsibilities Summary:
Level B:
- Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning
- Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in line with UNSW policy
- Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback at both course and program level using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments
- Provide consultation and feedback to students regarding assessments, including marking assignments, mid-session and final examinations
- Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics
- Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students
- Maintain and develop links within the discipline industry and profession (e.g. contributes to professional development activities), including other Disciplines in the School of Clinical Medicine and external health service partners and stakeholders.
- Recruit and support conjoint clinical staff to facilitate undergraduate education at clinical sites
- Undertake independent research in discipline or related area (as per the norms of the discipline), making an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise
Level C (in addition to above):
- Work collaboratively to identify and apply for internal education or other funding opportunities
- Work collaboratively with peers across the UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour, develop learning and teaching strategies and resources and contribute to an exchange of teaching ideas, and mentoring of staff
- Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and professional accreditation requirements (where relevant); experience in accreditation preferred
- Assist the Course Convenor in managing course (subject) administration including academic quality assurance and improvement

Skills and Experience Summary:
Level B:
- Medical degree (i.e. MBBS or MD) with medical registration in Australia
- Possession of FRANZCP or equivalent qualification (or be in the final stages of achieving – i.e. senior psychiatry registrar)
- Proven commitment to proactive maintenance of discipline knowledge and development
- Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, delivery of courses at an undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
- Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
- Demonstrated experience with industry or work-integrated learning.
- Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
- Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Commitment to ongoing development of skills in mental health education
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
Level C (in addition to above):
- Significant experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
- Evidence of professional development in teaching and a strong track record of teaching excellence, including fostering this in others
- Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
