DESCRIPTION
Kick It California (KIC, formerly known as CSH, the California Smokers' Helpline) is part of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. KIC conducts research as well as provides free cessation related counseling service. KIC was the first statewide telephone-counseling service for smoking cessation in the U.S. that was based on experimentally-proven protocol (established in 1992). Cessation service is now provided using telephone and internet-based protocols. The phone counseling service is provided in six languages--English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Korean, and Vietnamese. KIC conducts high-caliber intervention research as well as population studies. KIC is funded to conduct multiple survey and evaluation projects throughout the state, including the evaluation of California's TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) program. KIC currently has grants and contracts in excess of $10 million annually.
Under supervision of the Survey Research Supervisor 1, the Staff Researcher 2 will be primarily responsible for assisting with research study planning, design, and question development; interacting and coordinating with school site staff and officials; coordinating research study implementation and data collection; monitoring and improving response rates; collecting and analyzing qualitative data; assisting in preparation of reports and deliverables; and conducting literature reviews. Areas of assignment may include one or more of the following: 1) local and statewide student surveys (e.g., Mapping Youth Health Behavior Survey, MYHB), 2) Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program evaluation, 3) agency-specific evaluation projects, and/or other special projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing data collection procedures and in contributing to protocols.
- Excellent computer skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to learn new software applications quickly.
- Versatile team player. Ability to self-start and achieve results with minimal direction.
- Ability to adapt to new projects and dependably handle multiple tasks and priorities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent writing skills, including ability to write protocols, technical documentation, and reports.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and sensitively (over the phone, Zoom, emails, etc.).
- Strong research skills. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience and training in the facilitation of surveys.
- Knowledge of the field of research related to tobacco use and prevention.
- Experience in conducting literature reviews.
- Knowledge of survey instrument development.
- Knowledge of program evaluation and/or school-based prevention programs.
- Experience using qualitative and/or statistical software applications.
- Experience working in a research setting using protocols involving human subjects including knowledge of UCSD HRPP policies and procedures.
