About the Role
The Research Funding Coordinator at the Department of Infectious Diseases, based at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, plays a crucial role in supporting researchers by identifying funding opportunities and assisting with grant applications.
The position involves managing contracts for Chief Investigators (CIs), providing a key contact for both pre and post award administration, and coordinating large and complex research proposals, including international funding opportunities.
Additionally, the Coordinator liaises with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth communication and compliance with university guidelines, and supports research reporting and ethics submissions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Identify and communicate funding opportunities and resources available via the University to assist researchers with their funding applications, provide advice and resources as required.
- Assist with the coordination and submission of large/complex collaborative research proposals and international funding opportunities.
- Management of all CI’s contracts (including trust funds).
- Understanding and awareness of the University budget model across the various funding sources and implications.
Who We Are Looking For
You will hold a graduate degree in biomedical science or a related field and have experience in preparing grant applications for various funding bodies, including Australian and international agencies.
You will manage large research projects, displaying high initiative, excellent communication, and organisational skills, and work both independently and collaboratively with a diverse team.
You will also coordinate various projects, using independent judgement to prioritise tasks, and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes. Knowledge of research administration, grant submission portals, and university budget models is advantageous.
You will also have:
- Graduate degree in biomedical science or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience preferably in health sciences, biomedicine, or related fields preferably in a higher education setting.
- Experience with or demonstrated ability preparing grant applications for both Australian and international funding bodies.
- Experience with or demonstrated ability in managing large research projects or programs, including advising research proposal and budget development.
- High level of initiative and demonstrated ability to plan, implement, prioritise, and set deadlines.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. The Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute).
Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, skin pathogens and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19.
