Role Description

Department of Health Sciences

The Department of Health Sciences is looking to appoint a Research Associate or Research Fellow in the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team working on methods to improve adolescent mental health.

The post offers the opportunity to be part of a large and successful multi-disciplinary Department, renowned for its methodological expertise and commitment to policy relevant research. You will conduct high quality statistical analyses of the Born in Bradford longitudinal birth cohort’s Age of Wonder programme, a rich, life course data set, that is tracking the health and wellbeing of young people.

The successful candidate will work will colleagues across the Born in Bradford collaboration to maximise the use of the rich and unique data emerging from our Born in Bradford Age of Wonder study of teenagers. You will develop Open Source material to increase accessibility of the datasets and undertake your own research using cutting-edge methodologies. You will be encouraged to undertake dissemination of your research through publications, seminars and conference presentations and contribute to the identification of possible new areas of research.

The post will sit within the prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Yorkshire and Humber Applied Research Collaboration (YH ARC), which aims to develop research partnerships to address specific health or care issues in the region and to undertake cutting edge health research.

Role

  • To contribute to and/or lead on the production of research outputs and research outcomes.
  • To participate actively in the planning and management of research projects, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance.
  • To contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding.
  • To contribute to the public understanding of research and scholarship.  

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

For both grades:

  • PhD in a relevant subject or, exceptionally, substantial experience at an equivalent level
  • Knowledge in mental health to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of a range of quantitative research techniques and methodologies
  • Ability to perform quantitative analyses in open-source software (e.g. R, python)
  • Experience of quantitative data analyses using large datasets
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication

For appointment at Grade 7, applicants also need:

  • Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research
  • Evidenced active participation in the planning and advancement of research projects
  • Proven ability to attract and obtain external research funding
  • Successful management of research projects including supervision of the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance to teams
