ABOUT THE ROLE
The position is part of the Student Experience portfolio which includes Student Success, Indigenous Education, Chaplaincy, Libraries, Student Life and Wellbeing, the purpose of this position is for the development and delivery of programs and initiatives to support Indigenous students across the student life cycle. The position reports to the Pro Vice Chancellor, Student Engagement.
Special Requirements
This position is a genuine occupational qualification, under s14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977(NSW)/s 28 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic)and is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people only.
To be eligible for this position, you must provide a statement and supporting documentation that
addresses how you meet each of the following criteria for Aboriginality:
i. be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
ii. identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and
iii. be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.
The University may request further information from applicants as required. Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to, a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Indigenous Education portfolio to develop, coordinate and implement strategies for the delivery of programs and initiatives to prospective and current Indigenous students.
- Support and provide key strategic advice to the Student Experience leadership team and key University forums which address Indigenous student equity and access issues.
- Establish the development and implementation of university-wide strategies to support Indigenous students in teaching and learning, research, and community engagement opportunities.
- Establish and build strong relationships with University stakeholders and provide professional advice to other outreach providers and academic and professional areas supporting student equity.
- Prepare government reports related to Indigenous Student Support including the Indigenous Student Success Program (ISSP) and Away from Base (AFB) funding.
- Coordinate student progression data for the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Education Consultative Group (ATSIECG) to review, as well as coordinate review of ISSP spend and assist with grant writing applications to governments and funding bodies.
- Chair the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Consultative Group (ATSIECG) and representing the University on other such committees as deemed appropriate by the Vice Chancellor.
- Review research and policy development in relevant national and international Indigenous Education initiatives to disseminate best practice models, appropriate programs and advice.
- Promote the development of training modules for students on Aboriginal Cultural Safety and Cultural Security Training contributing to the creation and development of online assessments and learning materials for the Cultural Capability and Competency Framework, along with designing new and innovative methods in presenting workshops, promotional opportunities and resources.
ABOUT YOU
• A post graduate qualification and or extensive relevant management experience.
- Substantial management experience in the development of equity and access initiatives, preferably gained in a university environment or similar large and diverse organisation.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a role that includes team and project leadership and the management and development of people.
- Demonstrated experience in a similar position in engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and agencies.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to consult at all levels an develop strong internal and external relationships with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent planning, organisational and project management skills, included demonstrated ability to contribute to long term planning and key strategic direction and budget management.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret complex data, present findings and advocate positions to Senior and/or Executive management/committees.
- Proficient in the application of Microsoft Software – word, excel, email and project management tools.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Australian tertiary and school education sectors, particularly relating to students and equity.
