Job Summary

The Senior Wireless Network Engineer will spearhead the architectural design, deployment, enhancement, and governance of all wireless services and systems, ensuring their optimal performance and reliability. This pivotal role involves the sophisticated management of complex technical challenges, ensuring rapid resolution to maintain unparalleled wireless service standards throughout UCSF.

This expert will also provide strategic oversight and daily technical direction for the wireless network infrastructure, ensuring that systems operate at maximum efficiency with minimal interruptions. The Senior Wireless Network Engineer will champion the adherence to advanced industry practices as well as internal Information Systems (IS) and university policies, enhancing system compliance and operational excellence.

Moreover, this role includes the provision of advanced technical guidance and training to other IS teams, facilitating continuous professional development, and ensuring that the team remains at the forefront of wireless network technology.

The Senior Wireless Network Engineer ensures that IT services are responsive to the evolving needs of a diverse array of clients, partners, and stakeholders within both administrative and academic spheres. By leading a team of engineers, this role drives the pursuit of innovative solutions and the delivery of superior service across UCSF. This position is responsible for directing strategic and operational planning to align with business objectives, prioritizing initiatives, and overseeing the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems.

This strategic technical leadership ensures that the organization's IT infrastructure is not only robust and efficient but also scalable and adaptable to meet future demands, aligning with ongoing health and campus growth and the broader institutional vision.

The Senior Wireless Network Engineer will positively impact UCSF’s operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of UCSF’s academic mission. This team member will advance UCSF’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. This role will execute the University’s vision while modeling UCSF’s culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $113,500 - $258,100 (Annual Rate).

The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the company's computer network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • ACMP (Aruba Certified Mobility Professional) or Equivalent
  • ACCP (Aruba Certified ClearPass Professional or Equivalent
  • 7 to 10+ years of expert experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, network services, wireless technology, information technology, or network operations.
  • Significant experience designing controller clustering, failover methods, and caveats, group management, AP modes of operation, patching, RF management, etc. Experience with wireless optimizations, including AP placement, ideal signal levels, optimized roaming, spectrum selection, channel tuning, cell optimization, QoS, etc.
  • Advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network-related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 2 and 3 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Expert experience in information technology, network engineering, or wireless networks.
  • Expert-level experience troubleshooting wireless networks, including client experience testing, wireless packet analysis, etc.
  • Advanced experience with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, RF design, and WLAN fundamentals. Knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols. Knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure the quick resolution of issues.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate with customers, understand their needs, and provide support and guidance in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated advanced experience in analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex network issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate technical information and ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Advanced organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
  • Extensive experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  • Advance level experience with local, state, and federal regulations related to IT systems, privacy laws, safety standards, and service level agreement adherence.
  • Thinks creatively and proposes innovative ideas, including the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Is able to work with agility in a fast-paced environment.

License/Certification

  • ACMP (Aruba Certified Mobility Professional) or Equivalent
