Description

The Oglethorpe University Chemistry Program is seeking adjunct instructors to teach General Chemistry I (lecture and/or lab) during the Fall 2024 semester. The lecture sections enroll no more than 20 students, and the lab sections enroll no more than 16 students, so the learning environment is ideal for one-on-one faculty-student interactions and for implementing innovative pedagogical strategies. Successful applicants must be interested in progressive, student-centered models of chemistry instruction. Applicants will be expected to foster an inclusive learning environment by engaging in and promoting diverse teaching, learning, and mentoring communities.

Teaching assignments will be based on instructor experience, areas of expertise, and availability. Lecture courses meet 3 hours/week (either three 60-minute sessions or two 90-minute sessions). Laboratory courses meet 3 hours/week (one three-hour session). The semester runs from August 26th to December 3rd, with final exams in the following week. Final grades for the semester are due on Friday, December 13th. For more information about the teaching schedule, please reach out to Mariel Meier, Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences (mmeier@oglethorpe.edu).

Oglethorpe is committed to fostering a campus community and intellectual environment that recruits and maintains diverse faculty and staff, promotes a culture of respect for diverse experiences and perspectives, and understands and addresses the role of inequality in shaping our individual and collective identities. Adjunct faculty will be mentored and supported by Chemistry Program faculty who are committed to excellence in teaching and fostering a collaborative community.

Qualifications

M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field. Candidates who are ABD (all but dissertation) will also be considered.

Compensation:

CHM-101 (lecture course): $3300/semester

CHM-101L (laboratory course): $1650/semester

To Apply:

Candidates should submit a cover letter that describes previous teaching experience and experience with research-based active learning pedagogies. A current C.V. should also be included, with contact information for two references. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their candidacy in an interview setting- either in person or by video.
