About UNSW IT and the role:
Position Summary UNSW’s reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, technology and platforms is increasingly important in underpinning its daily operations as well as educational outcomes. The AI Platform Lead will be responsible for the strategic development and operational management of the AI platform at UNSW. The role of the AI Platform Lead includes strategic, leadership and hands-on components that involve working with key stakeholders across UNSW to help gain long-term business value from university’s investment in AI systems and technologies. The role will translate university’s current and future strategic technology objectives into a prioritised plan of features, designs, and specifications against the upcoming roadmap of our AI platform and technology releases. The role will also define the platform strategy and ensure the platform supports the university's AI initiatives effectively. While the AI Platform Lead will initially have no direct reports, the role will provide technical leadership to the AI team and others in UNSW IT with respect to AI. As UNSW’s AI systems, technology and platforms develop, it is expected the role will have two direct reports. This role will report to the Head of AI.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Maintain and continuously develop an in-depth understanding of AI trends and technologies to drive innovation, improve performance and enable the University to meet its AI objectives.
- Establish and collaboratively lead the facilitation with key stakeholders on the AI platform strategy in alignment with UNSW’s current and future strategic technology needs with respect to existing technology architecture and the AI roadmap.
- As the AI platform subject matter expert, advise and make recommendations to the AI Ecosystem Groups on upcoming products and features, including how UNSW should use or not use particular products/features.
- Contribute to AI Ecosystem groups and communities of interest.
- Develop an effective AI platform consumption strategy for UNSW.
- Implement the AI platform strategy, collaborating with the various IT technical teams and end users such as researchers, academics and professional staff and other relevant stakeholders in doing so.
- Provide governance to the process of onboarding new AI systems and tool sets.
- Lead the engagement with AI platform vendors on behalf of UNSW, in collaboration with AI Ecosystem Technology Taskforce.
- Work with Vendor & Commercial teams to stay ahead of financial implications and licencing updates for all AI platforms and services, and ensure we get the best value for our contract.
- Lead and coordinate the AI platform team to deliver robust and scalable AI foundational technologies for the development and implementation of AI systems.
- Clearly communicate the strategy and the progress towards platform and feature delivery to UNSW Staff (including ULT) and Students.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
- Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
Skills and Experience:
- In-depth understanding of AI systems and platforms, with relevant qualifications.
- Extensive experience in platform management, product management or similar.
- Effective self-leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, and importantly, the ability to influence stakeholders.
- Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Capacity to plan to achieve priority outcomes and respond flexibly to changing and at times ambiguous environments.
- Ability to work systematically to anticipate implications and make informed decisions.
- Strong analytical and proven ability to quickly understand complex business and systems and provide a suited solution for clients.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to write concisely and persuasively to a wide range of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to continually improve and proactively problem solve.
- High level organisational skills with the ability to deal with multiple tasks and priorities.
- Ability to work independently when given a broad set of principles and objectives.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
