Student Partner (Student Opportunity)

Are you a student at University of Southampton interested in advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion at the University of Southampton? Would you like to work in partnership with colleagues from SUSU and the University to enhance the provision and experience for those from under-represented backgrounds?

We're seeking to appoint a passionate, highly motivated Student Partner to co-lead and support work to produce (one of) three Representational Guides.

What are Representational Guides?

A Representational Guide is a guide specifically for students from under-represented backgrounds to support their university experience by signposting and alerting these student groups to the academic, social, and financial provision available to them whilst studying at the University of Southampton.

Which under-represented communities will these guides support?

Whilst we recognise there are many under-represented student groups within our university community (many of whom are supported by similar guides), this year we will be prioritising provision for:

  • Disabled students
  • Care-experienced and estranged students
  • Student parents (including those with caring responsibilities)

What type of work will I be doing?

  • You will lead in the production of one of three Representational Guides i.e., produce relevant content for a particular guide which adequately signposts to key support mechanisms available within (and potentially outside) of the university.
  • You will carry out research with different under-represented student groups to inform the creation and content of one of these Representational Guides.
  • You will liaise with relevant university stakeholders and student groups to co-create, gain feedback and discuss impactful ways to disseminate the guides.

What else do I need to know?

  • Depending on the applicant pool, you may be working in partnership with another student to produce one Representational Guide.
  • The role is offered as a 1-month fixed contract between mid-July to mid-August 2024. You will be required to work for 25 hours (or 12.5 hours if you are partnered with another student) during this period. A set working pattern will be agreed with successful candidate(s).
  • The role will be paid at £12.01 hour
  • Holiday Entitlement – Pay for accrued holiday entitlement will be based on a pro rata rate of 28 days leave at 12.07% of earnings. Your accrued holiday entitlement will be identified separately on your payslip.
  • Interviews for this role will be taking place on Wednesday 3rd July via Microsoft Teams.

About You

You are a passionate member of our student community with a strong desire to support our under-represented students’ experiences. Whilst not essential, we would see the below characteristics and skills as desirable for the role:

  • Identify with one of the three under-represented groups of interest, thereby utilising lived experience and personal networks to authentically co-create these Representational Guides.
  • Confident in liaising and working with a diverse range of stakeholders (e.g., students and staff).
  • Effective communication and time management skills to create a clear, accessible resource within a set timeframe.
