Position Description 

Position description:

Harvard Divinity School seeks to appoint an adjunct instructor to teach the course, “Pastoral Care for Religious Nones” during the Fall 2024 semester (September 2024 to December 2024). The goal of this course is to define what pastoral care looks like for nonreligious people, to provide students with new tools for their spiritual care toolkit, and to increase competency in non-religiously based chaplaincy.

Successful candidates will be able to introduce students to theories and practices of spiritual care for religiously unaffiliated persons, as well as lead students in the cultivation of their own experimental approaches and forms of spiritual care practices. 

The course must be open and accessible to the Divinity School’s diverse and multi-religious student body.

Please note that all Harvard employees must reside in the New England area as of August 1, 2024. It is expected that all instructors are versed and able to teach either remotely and/or in-person, following all CDC, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and Harvard COVID-19 guidelines, should that become necessary.

Basic Qualifications 

Candidates should demonstrate experience and excellence in teaching.

Previous publications in the area of the appointment are desirable, though not required.

Basic Qualifications are:

1. Experience in the practice and/or instruction of spiritual care among non-religious or religiously unaffiliated populations.

2. Sensibility to a multi-religious, diverse student body.

3. Master’s degree in theological/religious studies, counseling/pastoral care, or related field required. 

Additional Qualifications 

MDiv or similar degree required, PhD preferred.
