Teaching Associate
Job Description
The Lab Teaching Assistant (TA) provides instructional support to faculty and students in a laboratory setting. The TA is responsible for assisting in the preparation, execution, and evaluation of laboratory sessions for undergraduate courses.
Working Conditions: Requires time in a laboratory setting, handling materials and equipment. May involve standing for extended periods and occasional lifting of supplies or equipment.
Hours: Approximately 10-20 hours per week, depending on the course and departmental needs.
Typical Activities
Key Responsibilities:
- Instructional Support: Conducting laboratory sessions, including demonstrating techniques and procedures. Provide guidance and support to students during lab activities to help them understand course concepts. Answer questions, troubleshoot problems, and clarify instructions related to experiments.
- Safety and Compliance: Enforce safety protocols and ensure students follow proper procedures to maintain a safe working environment. Handle hazardous materials and chemicals according to safety guidelines. Report any safety incidents or equipment malfunctions to the instructor or lab supervisor.
- Grading and Assessment: Grading lab reports, quizzes, or assignments as directed by the instructor. Provide constructive feedback to students to help improve their performance.
- Administrative Tasks: Track student attendance and participation during lab sessions. Record and maintain accurate data related to experiments and results. Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions as required.
- Student Liaison: Act as a bridge between students and the MPH program. Represent student interests, voice concerns, gather feedback, and communicate important information from the program administration to students and vice versa. Ensure that students' needs and perspectives are considered in decisions that affect them.
Required Qualifications
Enrollment in a graduate program related to the discipline of the course. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Experience working in a laboratory setting, with a focus on safety and organization. Ability to manage time and multitask in a dynamic learning environment. Shadow all HSCI 1200 labs one term before starting to teach the lab.
Preferred Qualifications
Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with CSUSB.

Salary
Salary is commensurate with experience. Teaching Associate - Academic Year (2354) Range 1 $3,245 - $7,598 Per Month, and other ranges as listed.
