Position Details

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £46,049 with potential progression once in post to £48,822

Fixed Term Contract until June 2027

Job Summary

The Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies is looking to appoint a full-time Teaching Fellow to cover planned teaching on our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, including modules focusing on modernism in Germany and Austria.

Main Responsibilities

Main responsibilities include convening and teaching the Second Year optional module: ‘Art, Architecture, and Design in Fin-de-siécle Vienna’ and the Final Year optional module: ‘Fashioning Flesh and Technology: Modernism and the Body in Germany 1918-1933.’ In addition, the successful applicant will also contribute to a range of other core undergraduate modules. They will undertake first and second marking, as well as dissertation supervision, within the department on a range of topics at a variety of levels as required. The role will also involve pastoral support for students through personal and group tutorials and office hours, attending departmental meetings, and will include other departmental administrative roles.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have a PhD in the History of Art in the field of German and/or Austrian Modernism. The ability to teach introductory art history modules across a broad chronological and/or geographical range is desirable and the ability to teach modules on German visual culture from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century with a particular focus on the body and sex and gender is essential. Adaptability and flexibility, fluency in written and spoken English, and experience of teaching history of art in a university department or equivalent are essential.
