Teaching Fellow for School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) PGCE programme

We are seeking an experienced Early Years, primary and/or secondary age phase practitioner to take on the role of teacher and tutor for the academic assignments of BSU’s highly regarded SCITT PGCE programme. Teaching takes place both in-person at our SCITTs across England and online, with much of the course delivered virtually.

About the Role

Bath Spa University’s School of Education provides the SCITT PGCE award to a growing number of SCITT providers, working with 18 partners from September 2026. Whilst the SCITT provides the training that leads to a recommendation for QTS, this role relates to Bath Spa University’s provision of the academic award of PGCE only. In order to support trainees in understanding the value of critical awareness of professional practice at Masters level, through the completion of academic assignments, the post holder will deliver: assignment launches, seminars to groups of trainees, individual tutorials, online support and assignment assessment. The work of the SCITT PGCE programme is delivered at a range of sites across England.

You will have QTS and a first degree, with a higher degree (or working towards a higher degree) desired, in line with the postgraduate level of the course. You will be confident in teaching at Masters level and working with trainee teachers. You will have experience of working in a school and/or other educational institution. Experience in the Early Years, primary and/or secondary age phase is essential, but you will also have knowledge and understanding of learning pedagogy and current thinking in wider educational issues.

About You

  • Qualified Teacher Status and relevant first degree
  • Successful experience of teaching in schools
  • Successful experience of working with trainee teachers in Initial Teacher Education
  • Sound knowledge of subject, phase, pedagogy and/or policies in the field of education
  • Demonstrable evidence of both working in a team and managing own time with limited supervision
  • Holds, or pursuing, a higher degree
  • Experience of a range of teaching contexts and methods
  • Awareness of issues in ITE/HE teaching and learning
  • Experience of supporting learners in virtual learning environments

For further information on the essential and desirable skills we’re looking for, please refer to the Job Description.

  • The salary range shows the potential maximum pay progression in addition to any annual inflationary increase to your pay. Please note that our default position is to appoint into the lower end of the range, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
  • All members of the teaching team are invited to staff meetings and can access staff training opportunities provided by the University.
  • There is no requirement to undertake research activites.
  • The postholder will be required to work unsociable hours at times e.g. occasional early starts and late returns on SCITT-centre visits and some twilight workshop teaching; this will be included in your weekly working hours (37 hours per week).
  • You will be required to work at a range of SCITT centres at times, possibly at a distance to the university and on remote sites; you will be expected to have a driving license and access to a car; mileage costs can be claimed.
