Teaching Professor (all ranks) in Aviation Programs (Professional Flight)
Location: Polytechnic Campus
The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and The Polytechnic School (TPS) seek applicants for two teaching professor (all ranks) positions in professional flight in our Aviation program. Appointments may be at Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, or (Full) Teaching Professor rank, commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2026. These positions are career track appointments with a fixed-term academic year contract. It is anticipated that the contract will be renewed annually, subject to satisfactory performance and the needs of the university.
The Professional Flight in Aviation program is one of the outstanding programs on the ASU Polytechnic campus, attracting students from across the nation and world. The Professional Flight in Aviation program curriculum is unique, using a professional practice model with integrated, active learning strategies and incorporating high-technology simulators. The program graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Management Technology, with a concentration in Professional Flight. The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses as assigned, such as: Private, instrument, commercial, and/or instructor pilot ground schools; Aviation weather/meteorology; Aviation safety; Aviation security; General aviation operations and management; Airport management/planning; Air transportation; Air traffic control; and Unmanned aerial systems. Also, all faculty should be able to assume the FAA Chief Ground Instructor role for Part 141 ground courses; serve on program, school, and university committees as assigned; and serve as faculty advisor for selected student clubs.
The Polytechnic School seeks candidates who have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates experiential learning, contributes to our academic programs, promotes transdisciplinary teaching, and helps the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, and valuing entrepreneurship. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools of Engineering are expected to adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of courses.
Essential Functions
- Deliver in-class and online instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level; hold office hours
- Conduct laboratory sessions in coordination with lecture content, including instruction using flight simulation technologies
- Engage undergraduate and graduate students in a project-based educational setting involving theses, applied and/or course projects
- Support and maintain program compliance with FAA Part 141 standards
- Participate in educational program design, delivery, and assessment of learning, and develop curriculum
- Advise and mentor students
- Serve on program and unit committees and participate in college, university and professional service activities
- Serve as faculty advisor for selected student clubs
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
- Earned Master’s or Ph.D. degree in engineering, aviation, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
- Earned FAA Advanced Ground Instructor (or Certified Flight Instructor) and Instrument Ground Instructor (or Certified Flight Instructor Instrument) certificates by the time of appointment
- Demonstrated experience in a field applicable to aviation
- Commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank

- Extensive aviation experience
- Evidence of excellence in university teaching
- Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to teaching
