Teaching Professor in Sociology

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). While this position welcomes applications from individuals external to the university, current Academic Teaching Staff are first notified of available positions and will receive first consideration in accordance with the terms of the agreement. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, and the salary will be commensurate with experience.

The Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Teaching Professor at the rank of assistant, associate or full lecturer, with an anticipated starting date of July 1, 2026 to teach all levels of courses in Sociology.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will provide in-person instruction for a range of Sociology courses ranging from large lecture classes to smaller seminars. Standard teaching load is eight courses per year and includes Spring or Summer teaching. The focus of the position is research methods, including social statistics, with the possibility of teaching courses in other fields such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, or Criminology. There is no research component associated with this position, although the successful candidate is expected to remain current with the relevant literature in their fields as it applies to their teaching assignments.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline. ABD applicants with a strong expectation of completing the PhD before July 1, 2026, may also be considered;
  • Evidence of a commitment to developing innovative pedagogical approaches;
  • Experience in teaching research methods, including social statistics.

In addition, the following will be considered an asset:

  • Experience with diverse instructional software and technologies;
  • A track-record of service to a department or comparable unit;
  • Versatility in teaching;
  • Experience with pedagogical innovations, such as experiential learning, community-service learning, project-based learning, and/or work-integrated learning.

Application Instructions: To have your application considered, please submit the following: a cover letter that includes highlights of the candidate’s profile (2 pages max); a curriculum vitae that includes the names of three referees; course syllabi from at least three recent courses; a teaching dossier that should include at a minimum a) a statement regarding the applicant’s approach to teaching Sociology; and b) student evaluations of teaching, preferable from different levels if available; c) guidance on how those teaching evaluations are conducted and interpreted, and d) any additional evidence of teaching effectiveness, including peer assessments, departmental chair assessments, and teaching awards (20 pages maximum). Letters of reference will only be requested for shortlisted candidates. Referees should be prepared to send their letters by 24 January 2026.
