Teaching Specialist – Undergraduate Education (PES Department)

The Undergraduate Education (UGE) PES Department in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota is seeking to create a pool of qualified applicants for temporary, part-time Teaching Specialist positions. These roles fill course needs that cannot be staffed by regular faculty. This posting is for the 2025–26 academic year, including potential openings in Fall 2025 (August–December) and/or Spring 2026 (January–May). Selected candidates will be supervised by the Lead Academic Advisor in the President's Emerging Scholars Program.

Time Appointment: 100% appointment for assigned course(s)

Teaching Specialists will be responsible for:

  • Instructing undergraduate students in assigned courses
  • Holding regular office hours to assist and advise students
  • Participating in departmental meetings as relevant

Course Details:

CLA 1005: Introduction to Liberal Arts Learning (Fall – 1 credit) - A First-Year Experience (FYE) course combining group discussions, scholarly readings, online media, and a final project. The course helps students navigate college, the workplace, and society, fostering personal excellence, fulfillment, and wellness in a diverse, interconnected world. Class Time: Wednesdays, 2:30–3:45 p.m. Teaching Meetings: Every other Tuesday, 1:00–2:00 p.m.

CLA 2005: Introduction to Liberal Education and Responsible Citizenship (Spring – 1 credit) - An FYE course that builds on CLA’s core themes of identity, community, and civic engagement. Through discussion, readings, media, and a memoir project, students explore personal and social responsibility in a culturally inclusive environment. Class Time: Wednesdays, 2:30–3:45 p.m. Teaching Meetings: Every other Tuesday, 1:00–2:00 p.m.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education or a closely related field
  • Minimum one year of teaching or mentoring experience
  • Broad familiarity with the liberal arts
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including experience supporting individuals with varying identities and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Canvas, Google Suite, and instructional technologies
  • At least one year of experience in higher education
