Technician III - CAS - Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell is a world-class department that conducts research and teaching in the area of general molecular biology and genetics. The Liu Lab uses the free-living nematode C. elegans as a model system to discover new players and dissect their mechanisms of action in a highly conserved signaling pathway, the BMP (bone morphogenetic protein) pathway. We use a combination of molecular, genetic and biochemical approaches for these studies. Results from these studies will contribute to the general understanding of developmental processes and fundamental mechanisms involved in cell-cell signaling.
While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.
Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), provide routine technical support of lab operations in molecular biology, genetics and cell biology for a developmental biology research laboratory. Responsibilities include but are not limited to performing various biochemistry, molecular biology and genetic experiments under the general supervision of the PI such as protein purification, DNA extraction, PCR, sub-cloning, transformation, DNA and protein gel electrophoresis, genetic crosses, genotyping, genetic and molecular epistasis experiments, immunofluorescence staining and living imaging, nematode microinjection, fluorescence microscopy, etc. Maintain lab notebook records. Collect and analyze data using straightforward statistical methods and computer software. Assist with data preparation for publication in papers, grant proposals and scientific presentations. Adhere to lab safety protocols with a solid understanding of laboratory safety techniques and procedures. Assist in preparing and sterilizing stock solutions, various media and agar plates; sterilize and discard used plates; maintain lab nematode, yeast, bacteria and DNA stocks and their inventory using FileMaker Pro and/or Excel; ensure the maintenance of the overall laboratory, including lab equipment, inventory and disposing of chemical waste, package and shipping samples to other laboratories.
This is a one-year, benefits eligible appointment, with possible extension pending available funding.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's degree and up to 2 years relevant experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or related subject or equivalent combination.
- Experience in a laboratory setting with prior knowledge in molecular biology or biochemistry. Familiarity with Microsoft packages including Excel and FileMaker.
- Must be personable, flexible, possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in their work. Ability to prioritize while multi-tasking. Ability to work independently and take initiative while supporting the efforts of an overall team.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of people while creating a high-quality and respectful work environment.
