Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

As a Genomics Technologist within Auckland Genomics at the University of Auckland, you won’t just be running protocols — you’ll be enabling discovery across biomedical science, ecology, evolution, and beyond. Every project that moves through the facility represents new knowledge in the making, and you’ll be at the centre of it.

This is a fast-paced, high-impact environment where precision meets performance. With multiple projects running simultaneously and tight turnaround times, your ability to stay calm under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver exceptional quality will be critical.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality genomics outcomes in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with competing deadlines and complex project demands
  • Integrate lab expertise with advanced computational workflows, including confident use of high-performance computing platforms
  • Act as a trusted technical partner, building strong relationships with researchers, postgraduate students, and commercial stakeholders
  • Proactively identify workflow improvements and drive continuous
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, organisational capability, and resilience while managing a high-volume workload

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) permanent position

Remuneration: $78,601 - $90,700 per annum, dependent on experience

He kōrero mōu | About you

You are technically strong, calm under pressure, and highly organised. You enjoy working at pace and understand the demands of delivering high-quality scientific services within strict timelines.

You will bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (MSc or PhD preferred)
  • 2–3 years’ experience in a molecular biology or analytical laboratory environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-pressure, deadline-driven settings
  • Experience managing high workloads while maintaining quality and compliance
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills — confident engaging with researchers, students, and commercial clients
  • Advanced attention to detail in laboratory practice and record keeping
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with the ability to anticipate issues before they arise
  • Strong computational capability, including experience working on high-performance computing/supercomputing infrastructure
  • Experience with NGS library preparation and QC analysis (preferred)
  • Basic bioinformatics skills (e.g., bash scripting, sequencing QC; familiarity with NESI/REANNZ advantageous)
