Temporary Language Instructor, ESL
Position Summary
The English as a Second Language Program in the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies offers daytime Intensive English Program courses as well as Evening ESL Communication Skills Courses. The Glasscock School offers exemplary educational opportunities for the Houston community and beyond.
The English as a Second Language Program Instructor position requires some flexibility and availability to teach assigned hours in either the morning, the afternoon or the evening program, as agreed upon with the Director. ESL courses average 12 students per class. The number of hours will vary, depending on the needs of the program. Compensation is based on instructional hours in the classroom.
This is a part-time, non-benefits eligible position.
Ideal candidates should have extensive skills and experience in teaching English as a Second Language to adults in an intensive English program setting. The ideal candidate is creative, has a passion for teaching international students and enjoys working in a collaborative environment.
Essential Functions
- Teaches English as a Second Language in the classroom as assigned and as agreed upon with the Director.
- May be asked to teach either in the morning, afternoon, or evening program
- Follows the curriculum that is set for the program
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree or equivalent in ESL or a closely related field. A degree in a closely related field must be accompanied by 12 graduate hours in ESL.
- Minimum of one year's experience teaching English as a Second Language
- Ability to teach all skill areas and all levels from beginning through advanced
- Native-level fluency in the English language
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent planning and organizational skills including the ability to set individual and classroom goals and to promote program goals.
- Must use discretion and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive data and issues
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent classroom management skills and attention to detail for recordkeeping
- Ability to use computer and AV equipment for classroom instruction required
