Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
Description: A detail-oriented Scientific Data Analyst to support the curation, quality control, and standardization of oceanographic, biological, and geological datasets. This position focuses on hands-on data management tasks that ensure scientific datasets are accurate, well-organized, and prepared for analysis, archiving, and sharing.
Primary Responsibilities
- Curate and organize oceanographic, biological, and geological datasets from field, laboratory, and sensor-based sources.
- Convert incoming data into consistent, well-structured formats (e.g., CSV, NetCDF, Excel).
- Ensure files are clearly organized, named, and documented for reuse.
- Perform routine QA/QC checks to identify missing values, format inconsistencies, unit errors, and outliers.
- Validate data against sampling protocols and basic scientific expectations.
- Document all QA/QC steps and corrections.
- Assist in preparing datasets for submission to data repositories or internal databases.
- Maintain basic metadata, data dictionaries, and user documentation.
- Work closely with scientists, technicians, and data managers to understand data context and collection methods.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in oceanography, marine science, biology, geology, environmental science, data science, or a related field.
- 2+ years of demonstrated experience working with scientific or environmental datasets
- Familiarity with data QA/QC concepts and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to follow established procedures and document work clearly.
Work Hours: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Work Days: Monday - Friday
Hours Per Week: 20
Anticipated Hiring Range: $25 / hour
Special Instructions to Applicants: Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
