The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Quantum Computing and Simulation. We invite candidates working across the full quantum information science frontier — whether pursuing foundational theory, developing powerful computational and simulation methods, or forging direct connections to emerging quantum technologies and physical platforms. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: quantum…
many-body physics; quantum simulation of field theories and strongly correlated systems; theoretical quantum optics; quantum sensing and metrology; quantum communication and networks; quantum information and computation; quantum algorithms and complexity; quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing; and quantum architectures and resource estimation. The ideal candidate will bring a perspective that enriches, complements and connects the department's existing research strengths. The Department of Physics & Astronomy hosts vibrant programs in condensed matter physics, astrophysics, biophysics, and high-energy and nuclear physics, with large-scale computational modeling and simulation playing a central role in discovery across these areas. We seek a colleague whose work creates a coherent quantum computational and information-theoretic thread among these fields—not as an isolated specialization, but as an intellectual bridge that may foster collaboration across the department and beyond, including with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the newly established Vanderbilt Institute for Quantum Innovation at Chattanooga.
Responsibilities
• Establish and lead an independent, externally funded research program;
• Contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in physics;
• Support the Arts & Science Core curriculum;
• Mentor graduate students and postdoctoral scholars;
• Engage with Vanderbilt's interdisciplinary research community and external partners, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Vanderbilt Institute for Quantum Innovation at Chattanooga.
Qualifications
· Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field, awarded no later than August 1, 2027;
· Demonstrated research excellence in theoretical physics, with expertise in one or more areas represented in the search;
· A strong research program addressing important questions in quantum computing and simulation;
· Evidence of, or clear potential for, securing external research funding;
· Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship at all levels.
