Offer Description
Associate professor
There is a vacancy for a tenure track associate professor at the Department of Informatics within quantum technology and quantum computing. This is a 6-year fixed term, with a possible promotion to full professor at the end of this period.
About the department
The digitization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education underscores the crucial role of informatics in the development of our society. Research and education in computer science are crucial for the digital transformation of our society to succeed. The Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen is a central actor in the advancement of computer science with its eight internationally recognized research groups in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, visualization, and didactics. Affiliated centers and labs include the Center for Data Science (CEDAS), the Computational Biology Unit (CBU) and the Energy Informatics Lab, serving as important extension of the Department’s research and education activities.
The Department offers computer science education at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels, observing a growth in the number of students, research directions, and employees. Currently, the Department has about 1000 students and 150 employees from over 35 countries, among which 37 are Faculty members and 50 PhD candidates.
Work tasks/research field
Quantum Technology is a current recent focus area of the University of Bergen. The Faculty of Science and Technology is now establishing Quantum UiB – Bergen Centre for Quantum Technology, which will be hosted by the Department of informatics, in tight collaboration with the Department of physics and technology. The centre, which will be operative in August 2026, is supported financially by the Trond Mohn Research Foundation and involves academic and industrial partners. The Department of informatics is also participating in the new integrated 5-year master (siving) study program in quantum technology that is right now accepting its first students. To strengthen our research expertise in quantum technology, as well as our teaching and supervision capacity in the new study program, the department opens a tenure track position.
Within the department, several of our research groups are engaged in quantum computing and Quantum UiB; in particular the research groups in secure communication, in bioinformatics, in optimization, and in machine learning. With this announcement we are seeking candidates to strengthen one of the main research directions of Quantum UiB: quantum optimization and simulations, involving a large degree of machine learning. In particular, we are seeking candidates who are experts in quantum technology and computing, with expertise and strong interest also in optimization or machine learning (preferably both). The person employed will become a member of either the research group in optimization or the research group in machine learning, and also contribute to the research, teaching and supervision in that group.
The successful candidate is expected to apply for external research funding.
Qualifications and personal qualities
- Doctoral degree within the field of computer science or physics, obtained within the last 5 years (may be extended for example in connection with statutory leave).
- Documented research expertise and experience in quantum technology and quantum computing is a requirement.
- Documented research experience and interest in optimization or machine learning in terms of a strong publication record in one of these fields is a requirement.
- Research experience in both optimization and machine learning (in terms of a strong publication record) is an advantage.
- Teaching and supervising experience in quantum technology and computing or related fields is an advantage.
- Scientific achievements including publications, educational and outreach activities will be evaluated and appreciated accordingly. The elapsed time since the award of the PhD, statutory leaves taken into account, will be taken into consideration in the overall assessment.
- Ability to work independently as well as having strong collaborative skills is a requirement.
- Ability to contribute to research teams both as leader and as participant is a requirement.
- It is expected that the successful applicant contributes to externally funded research activities. A good track record to attract external research funding commensurate with the applicant’s career stage is therefore beneficial.
- Experience in communicating and working with people outside of academia is an advantage.
- Applicants should summarise any contributions made to gender balance, inclusion, and diversity in academia, and provide a short description of their envision contributing to this at the Department of informatics and UiB.
- Excellent skills in oral and written English are required.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
Educational competence requirements
Basic teaching training and experience with the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This implies the ability to document
- completed formal pedagogical training (relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience can in some cases compensate for a completed course in teaching and learning in higher education).
- basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision.
Educational competence must be documented in an educational portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. You will find more detailed information about criteria and documentation requirements for assessing educational competence here.
Applicants who are unable to document adequate educational competence upon appointment, can still be hired, and must then meet the requirements within two years of assuming office. The University of Bergen provides pedagogical training and educational competence gaining opportunities to be able to meet the requirements within the given timeframe.
The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to attend courses in order to learn Norwegian and must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of assuming office.
The University of Bergen emphasizes the importance of educational competence in scientific positions.
