The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. It includes 25 professors and more than 800 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department houses a machine shop at the cutting edge of technology as well as an electronic prototyping workshop that fully support teaching and research. The Department has internationally recognized expertise in several fields, and the selected candidate will benefit from various research infrastructures, numerous funded activities in partnership with industrial and governmental stakeholders, as well as unique opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations.

Position description

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Université Laval invites applications for a regular tenure-track faculty position in the field of solid mechanics and mechanical systems. Applications from all relevant areas related to solid mechanics and mechanical systems are welcome. The successful candidate must demonstrate interest and ability in teaching courses related to solid mechanics, mechanical systems, engineering, and design, as well as courses covering the fundamentals of mechanical engineering.

Responsibilities associated with this position include:

  • Teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Conducting research and publishing in fields related to the position;
  • Participating in the pedagogical and administrative activities of the Department, the Faculty, and the University;
  • Contributing to external academic activities that enhance the visibility and reputation of the Department, the Faculty, and the University.

Selection criteria

Selection criteria are the followings:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering or in a discipline relevant to the research field of this position, or expect to obtain it within a reasonable and clearly defined time;
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or in a discipline relevant to the teaching duties of this position;
  • Relevance of scientific training and experience to the identified field;
  • Proven ability to conduct university-level research;
  • Proven ability or potential for developing an autonomous and original research program in relation to the identified field;
  • Proven ability or potential for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising graduate students, and committing to pedagogical innovation;
  • Potential or proven commitment to service to the community;
  • Ability to communicate and integrate into the institution’s French-speaking environment, and to teach in French as of the start date;
  • Alignment of the candidate’s professional potential with the key competencies required for the faculty position:
    • Analysis, synthesis and judgment;
    • Creativity and innovation;
    • Communication skills;
    • Interpersonal skills and openness;
    • Ability to work in a team and with partners;
    • Autonomy and sense of responsibility;
    • Sense of ethics and duty;
    • Supervision of persons;
    • Leadership;
  • Be a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec or be eligible and in a position to become a member within a reasonable time.

Hiring and treatment

Rank, salary, and benefits are determined in accordance with the prevailing collective agreement.
