POSITION: Full-time, nine-month, tenure-track or tenured appointment: Dance department chair.

We seek an outstanding scholar and teacher who will contribute to our mission of academic excellence, innovative research, and inclusive education.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, energetic leader with excellent communication skills and documented experience encouraging collaboration and cooperation with all our stake holders--administration, faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, parents, staff and alumni.

RANK/SALARY: Associate Professor or Professor tenure-track or tenured appointment in Dance. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Dance Department Chair is responsible for the academic, administrative and fiscal affairs of the Dance department under the supervision of and reporting to the dean.

The chair is expected to take a leadership role in coordination with the dean regarding all aspects of academic department operations and strategic initiatives and direction, including but not limited to program innovation and initiatives, encouragement and facilitation of extramural funding, student professional development and placement, curriculum assessment and development, and alumni relations and fundraising.

The chair serves as the academic leader of the department and is responsible for initiating and overseeing the recruitment and mentoring of faculty and students, as well as the promotion, tenure and merit processes applicable to all faculty in the department. The chair oversees curriculum planning, periodic program reviews, and accreditation matters affecting the academic discipline. The chair is responsible for all administrative functions within a department including: fiscal oversight, seeking external funding to support research and performance activities, coordinating the department's research and performance activity, assigning faculty workload, managing faculty and non-faculty staff, procurement of goods and services for the department and assigning research, performance, and classroom space for all departmental faculty. In carrying out department chair responsibilities, the chair consults with the Dean and departmental faculty bodies as appropriate.

In addition to administrative responsibilities, the dance chair will be expected to

  • teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in dance related to the candidate’s expertise;
  • cultivate and maintain relationships with prominent professional associations in the area and area schools to facilitate visibility and recruitment;
  • maintain a visible profile and active program of scholarly and/or creative activity;
  • conduct scholarly research and publish in peer-reviewed journals and/or perform in prominent venues, according to expertise;
  • seek external funding to support research and creative activities;
  • mentor and advise students from different backgrounds;
  • contribute to department and college service

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Completed PhD or MFA and/or evidence of significant performing or academic experience in Dance, Dance Studies, or a related discipline. Outstanding record of scholarly publication and/or creative achievement in dance and/or performance studies. Significant experience in academic or arts administration. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and creative activities. Commitment to creating inclusive, accessible spaces for all students. Experience teaching and mentoring students from different backgrounds in an inclusive setting. Evidence of collaborative and interdisciplinary work.
