Job Summary:
The Training Program Manager leads the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of the RARC Training Program, ensuring all research and animal care personnel receive high‑quality, relevant, and individualized training. This role combines program oversight, curriculum development, and team leadership to support the UW–Madison research community.

The RARC Training Manager oversees daily program operations and ensures the training group has what they need to conduct specific, high-quality training courses for students and staff. They represent the Training Program at IACUC, ACAPAC, and other institutional meetings, preparing and presenting training data for reviews. The role includes leading, supporting, and evaluating training staff by providing clear communication, constructive feedback, and staffing coverage as needed, as well as exercising full supervisory authority for at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees, including hiring, transferring, promoting, managing performance and conduct, and approving hours worked. This position collaborates with RARC leadership and campus partners to align training goals, advocate for resources, and support strategic planning while overseeing program resources, equipment, electronic infrastructure, and animal inventory related to training activities. Additionally, the Training Manager serves as the subject matter expert and liaison for internal and external stakeholders, representing the operational and strategic interests of the unit, and continuously monitors program effectiveness to drive innovation and improvement.
Key Job Responsibilities:
  • May monitor the unit budget and/or approve expenditures
  • May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • Manages instructional equipment and supplies
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of the specific and unique needs of the unit, division, or institution. Develops or assists with the development of strategic planning initiatives and objectives
  • Manages faculty development and engagement programs
  • Manages a portfolio of instructional design and/or technology services and support. May recommend, test, and audit selected learning technologies and/or methods
  • Provides effective project management and overall coordination of project teams to meet deadlines
  • Serves as the subject matter expert and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing operational and strategic information and representing the interests of the unit, division, or institution
  • Provides instructional design and/or technology services and support directly to faculty, staff, or other customers
  • Advises unit staff in the areas of learning theory, instructional design models, assessment, and instructional methods
Department: Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Research Animal Resources & Compliance (RARC)
Compensation:
The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $88,000 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. Required Qualifications:
Required qualifications include a minimum of 3 years relevant hands-on research animal experience in a work or classroom setting, teaching and/or training experience, and comfort with public speaking. Also required is proficiency in animal handling and blood collection techniques for common laboratory and/or agricultural species. The Training Manager must be able to communicate professionally and effectively in both written and oral formats. A successful candidate will have demonstrated success operating within both fixed and flexible deadlines while maintaining high-quality outcomes and strong organizational oversight.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include knowledge of the behavior, biology and husbandry of laboratory and agricultural animal species; surgical knowledge and experience in anesthesia, aseptic technique, tissue handling, wound closure; excellent computer skills; experience with an LMS or another system for documenting and tracking training completion; ability to work in a highly collaborative and flexible team environment; and curriculum development or educational program management. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and support a team effectively.
Education:
Bachelor's degree is preferred.
