TRIO Student Support Services Program--Academic Success Coach
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Academic Success Coach provides individualized and group academic support designed to promote student persistence, good academic standing, and timely graduation. Through tutoring, mentoring, academic skills workshops, and collaboration with program staff, the coach fosters engagement, strengthens students’ mastery of core subjects, and enhances self-regulated learning. This position plays a vital role in identifying academic challenges early, implementing targeted interventions, and documenting outcomes that contribute to the program’s federal objectives and overall student success.
Description of Work
Under the supervision of the Director of Student Support Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
The Academic Success Coach delivers intensive academic assistance to students through one-on-one and small-group tutoring in key content areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, and science. The coach supports participants—particularly freshmen and sophomores—by helping them master course concepts, improve study habits, and build confidence in their academic abilities. The role includes facilitating skill-development workshops focused on study strategies, time management, test preparation, and goal setting to enhance self-regulated learning and academic persistence.
The coach monitors student progress, tracks GPA trends, and identifies early indicators of academic risk. Working collaboratively with the Program Coordinator/Counselor and Director, the coach contributes to academic intervention plans and ensures alignment of services with the student’s Individual Educational Success Plan (IESP). In addition, the Academic Success Coach assists participants in preparing for standardized exams such as the GRE, MAT, Praxis, and TOEFL, supporting their pursuit of graduate or professional advancement.
This position also includes documenting all tutoring sessions, workshops, and interventions in the Blumen data system to provide verifiable records for reporting and compliance. The Academic Success Coach serves as a mentor to new participants, assisting with academic adjustment and campus engagement, and contributes to program recruitment, evaluation, and retention initiatives.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
- Knowledge of effective tutoring and learning support strategies for college-level coursework in reading, writing, math, and science.
- Understanding of student development, motivation, and retention principles, particularly for first-generation and low-income students.
- Ability to plan and facilitate academic skills workshops that promote independent learning and time management.
- Skill in monitoring academic progress, identifying challenges, and developing appropriate interventions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for establishing rapport with diverse student populations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with program staff, faculty, and campus partners.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and utilizing data systems (e.g., Blumen) for documentation and evaluation.
