Tutor (Quantitative Methods)

The School of Sociology and Criminology at Manchester Metropolitan is one of the largest in the UK; with 85 members of staff and over 1500 students across all levels. We deliver undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy.

The School produces high-quality teaching and high-quality research, with a strong focus on applied, empirical social science. Our success in achieving above sector student satisfaction demonstrates our commitment to excellent, student-centred learning. It is home to the Policy Evaluation and Research Unit, the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, and the Drugs Policy and Social Change centre. We are also nationally recognised for our innovative approach to quantitative methods and data literacy via our Q-Step Centre. In the REF21 we were rated top 15 for research power in both UoA20 and UoA21; our research is impactful, interdisciplinary and socially engaged.

The School is looking to appoint a Quantitative Methods Tutor on a fixed-term contract. This role will be based in the Q-Step Centre and will support the development of quality education and research in this area.

You will have a strong understanding of quantitative methods and a clear understanding of the needs of degree-level learners of quantitative methods from non-STEM disciplines (ideally Sociology and Criminology students).

You will ideally have experience of teaching quantitative methods to undergraduate students.

About you:

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to communicate complex information with clarity to a range of diverse audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Sufficient breadth and/or depth of specialist knowledge of quantitative methods/data analytics to work within established programmes.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and continuous research to remain up-to-date with developments in subject area.
  • Actively participate as a member of a programme and partnership team, providing mutual support to colleagues, and contributing to the development of productive working relationships.

Desirable:

  • A postgraduate qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject area or appropriate equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in order to deliver individual and team objectives.
  • Experience of developing partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

To apply: Please attach your CV and covering letter detailing how you meet the job specification (available on the university's website, accessed by the 'Apply' button).

Please note that in some circumstances, we will consider applicants who do not have these qualifications but are committed to obtaining them.
