UCLA Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program

UCLA Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program
University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF10739

UCLA's Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program is accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology. The program is directed by Dr. Brian Shuch, Professor of Urology, Director of the Kidney Cancer Program and Meinhardt Chair for Kidney Cancer Research. The UCLA Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program provides a post-residency training program in all aspects of urologic oncology, including clinical (medical and surgical), clinical trials and basic/translational urologic research.

Multi-disciplinary Clinical Management

Each fellow participates in the ongoing weekly activities of the urologic oncology patient population, specifically including patient evaluation, presentation, discussion with medical and radiation oncologists, surgical management and follow-up, and interaction with clinical trial research staff.

Surgical Oncology

Approximately three full days each week is devoted to hands-on surgical expertise in the operating room, where the fellow will become familiar with a wide variety of procedures.

Clinical Conferences

Participation is required in the following weekly conferences: Genitourinary Oncology Tumor Board and Urology Grand Rounds. Other conferences include Pathology conferences and an SUO Didactic series. There are a large number of conferences on campus through the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. The fellow is also expected to participate in the educational training programs for the residents, including journal club and teaching rounds.

Research

Each fellow will have an assigned research mentor amongst the urologic oncology staff. The team is supportive of the fellow finding a specific niche in an area of interest whether it be basic science, clinical trials, translational research, or health service research. A co-mentor can be outside the Urologic Department as long as there is a urologic oncology focus. The fellow is expected to participate in lab meetings with their research team and in the various UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center research conferences. In conjunction with the research area, each fellow will be given gradual responsibility in grant writing related to his/her lab projects. It is expected that each fellow submit at least one grant during their time at UCLA. Funding for research is supported through philanthropy, so having a successful grant while encouraged, is not required.

Clinical Research

The fellow has an opportunity to participate in an active program of urologic oncology clinical trials. We have a unique urology-led clinical trial program. Fellows can assist in planning, designing, writing and conducting the trial, along with the day-to-day follow-up of patients. This will also give the fellow the chance to interact with clinical nurses and study coordinators and assist in the final analysis and manuscript preparation.
