ULAR Technologist, Animal Laboratory
Job Description Summary
Provides experienced laboratory animal care to a variety of laboratory animals in a safe, humane and sanitary manner; adhering to all federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and policies. Feeds, waters and changes cages, maintains animals in specialized housing, such as barrier or containment facilities; Operates and maintains sanitation and sterilization of equipment. Administers routine treatments and medications. May assist the supervisor in training new employees; may act as functional supervisor in the absence of the supervisor. May provide census and cage card management using the POLARIS software system.
ULAR provides essential 24/7 services for the University of Pennsylvania. The Technologist, Animal Laboratory position is designated as "essential" and you are expected to work when normal campus operations are suspended (e.g.: inclement weather) or if there is an emergency impacting ULAR. In addition, you may be expected to work outside of your regular schedule during peak activity periods (e.g.: overtime, weekends). To the extent possible, managers will provide timely notice of modified work schedules.
Principal Position Responsibilities/Duties:
- Feeds, waters and changes cages; observes and reports signs of illness in laboratory animals, including variations in dietary habits, abnormal stool or urine or unusual behavior. Performs all other duties of the Laboratory Animal Technician positions.
- Maintains USDA, barrier and or containment facilities.
- Performs technical assignments such as administering of treatments, providing technical assistance to the research staff; may assist with surgical procedures.
- Assists in training of animal technicians, students and/or research staff
- May act as functional supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Perform Polaris systems management including but not limited to cage card generation, deactivation and processing and scanning reconciliation.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Five years experience in laboratory animal facility; or AALAS certification as LATG and four years experience in laboratory animal facility.
- Ability to read, write and comprehend English.
- Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
- Must be able to use a computer. Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be service oriented and able to work as a team member.
- Knowledge of proper handling and restraints of laboratory animals
- Knowledge of euthanasia techniques
- Ability to perform routine medical treatments, such as pilling and administering topical ointments.
