Essential Functions

  • Detain and arrest offenders. Complete prisoner processing procedures. Maintain and transport persons in custody.
  • Engage in public speaking, problem solving initiatives, and with citizens in crime reduction efforts through effective communication. Execute civil processes.
  • Learn and enforce university and departmental rules, regulations, and procedures, University Law Enforcement techniques, labor relations and proper safety practices. Participate in Community Oriented Police programs. Conduct community relations programs, professional radio and telephone communications activities. Attend community meetings. Must know basics of criminal and civil law; demonstrate complaint resolution skills, good report writing and public relations skills.
  • Write complete detailed reports, take field notes, prepare narratives, summaries and criminal case paperwork. Conduct complete thorough simple to complex investigations and interviews. Establish, preserve, protect and process crime scenes. Be a resource to pedestrians and motorists. Collect and process evidence, lost and found property. Testify truthfully, completely, and honestly in court.
  • Conduct assigned and structured patrols. Drive a patrol vehicle. Investigate suspicious persons and activity. Conduct legally authorized searches of persons, places and things. Engage in problem-solving initiatives to address crime related issues. Identify, respond, implement and analyze matters of community concern utilizing problem solving techniques and methodologies. Work with other agencies to address community concerns. Conduct surveillance of individuals and locations. Conduct security surveys of places and property.
  • Engage in self-initiated patrol. Responsible intelligence gathering and dissemination. Search with consent, warrants, or incident to a lawful arrest. Process individuals for traffic and criminal offenses.
  • May be assigned to special assignment after two full years of service; perform the duties of a Field Training Officer; be required to act as a shift leader or OIC in absence of a supervisor; receive and document complaints about officers in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Law enforcement hazards. May be required to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and unscheduled overtime Must be able to work any shift. Ability to climb stairs, pursue suspects, and administer first aid and emergency care. Use and maintain firearms with proficiency in accordance with department policy and State law. Maintain level of agility and physical fitness to perform the duties of a ULEO3. May work in inclement weather for long durations.

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED.

Required Trainings/Certifications

  • Must be currently certified as a Peace Officer by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) for the State of Ohio.
  • Must possess a current valid state issued operator’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Must pass recruitment testing (physical fitness assessment, background investigation, written test, polygraph examination, psychological assessment, toxicology screening, and medical examination).

Required Experience

Must have at least three (3) years of service and documented work history with another Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) certified law enforcement agency.

Starting hourly rate: $40.40
Post-Probationary rate: $42.44
