Required Qualifications:

Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have taken and passed the required University Police Investigator 1 state Civil Service Exam and be reachable on the appropriate current Civil Service List. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Must be able to perform mandatory overtime.

Brief Description of Duties:

University Police Investigators investigate crimes and other incidents that impact the overall safety and security of the campus community. The incumbent will regularly interview victims, witnesses, and suspects to obtain all relevant facts in order to assist in the apprehension and prosecution of suspects and violators. The incumbent will periodically instruct other members of the University Police Department on new law enforcement and investigative techniques as well as any ongoing trends affecting the campus community. The investigator will periodically meet with student organizations, student groups, faculty and staff to discuss personal safety concerns and will develop positive, cooperative relationships between University Police and the campus community as a whole.

  • Investigate reported crimes and incidents using the full range of investigative techniques to include; leveraging available surveillance technology, university owned technology programs as well as more traditional investigative techniques such as conducting in depth interviews, in an effort to apprehend and prosecute the suspects responsible.
  • Investigators are responsible for ensuring the civil and constitutional rights of those questioned are maintained at all times. Investigators must prepare related paperwork, ensure proper interrogation and investigative techniques were utilized and must maintain the proper chain of custody of all evidence. Investigators may be required to testify at criminal proceedings; Grand Jury, Huntley Hearing, criminal trial and employee arbitration hearings.
  • Investigators will liaise with other law enforcement officials and district attorneys to convey and obtain any relevant information that impacts the campus community.
  • Upon appointment investigators will be required to attend the Basic Course for Investigators course as well as attend various required training courses offered that enhance investigative skills. Investigators may be required to attend evidence room management course if performing the duties of the department's evidence custodian.
  • Investigators may meet with faculty, staff and students to discuss any personal safety concerns and develop cooperative relationships between the University Police and campus community.
  • Investigators may be required to conduct confidential background investigations of prospective employees in the Classified and Unclassified Service and employees of the Stony Brook University Police Department.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:

These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, shift and pass days varied, night and weekend work required. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 117 Hiring Rate $75,418. This position includes Location pay of $1,762, Supplemental Location pay of $2,571, Geographic pay of $15,000 and Expanded Duty Pay of $7,500 per year.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
